Surf Fishing

50lb braided is still only about the circumference of what mono...12lb?

That will be fine.  In surf fishing, you will get a lot of abrasion, teeth, and other things that will and can eat up monofilament in addition to just normal age/UV degradation.  And you'll have more sensitivity to boot.

You really can't go wrong with Shimano's higher end models, Penn, or some of the higher named brands.  In surf fishing, you get what you pay for.  I've had some of my Penn reels since I was in my 20s.  You take care of them and you'll have them a long time.

Just FYI...I've never caught a cobia from the shoreline...just off a kayak just beyond breakers.  Not saying they can't be, I've just never done it.  If you have access to eels, those are a cobia's cocaine.

If you're going surf fishing, I also highly recommend building out yourself a flounder rod.  While the big daddy is sitting and working for you in a holder (unless you're holding the entire time), you can use a smaller rig to work the edges for flounder, trout, and even drum that get into the sloughs.  I suggest a medium reel like a Penn 4000/5000 class and put it on a steelhead rod.  Enough length to cast way out if needed, but enough action to work the areas where the waves crash looking for flounder.

    • i think i go in the opposite direction of most. my ideal retirement is living in some old downtown area in a flat above some shop or something.  life out in the country was just something i got real tired of. My kids actually miss some of living out there, which i understand. that was where they grew up for the most part. 40 acres with a 2.5 acre pond. it was beautiful, but also way too much (and too expensive) for me to keep up with.
    • FLASHBACK: I remember back when ESPN was just starting--he was their anchor.  They used to show stuff like Rodeo and field hockey--I remember laughing when he went to a commercial mocking a cycling competition in Utah (or something similar--I made that up) and I laughed.  I told my dad, "We may have us a new anchor when we get back from commercial."  When they came back from commercial, Berman was looking very serious and he said, "Any comments by me do not reflect the views of ESPN....The men and women who cycle are dedicated athletes and we are honored to shine light on their sport." (Paraphrasing).  Dad laughed hysterically. My first memory of him--and that was like 1980.
    • Might not have a team without them. Although that probably applies to the Panthers, too.
