Steve Smith playing in 2016

to do it he'd have to break 16,000 receiving yards. andre johnson just bumped him out of the top ten a week or two ago, but a thousand yards next year would bump tim brown out of the #6 spot all time. another 300 yards on top of that (attainable if they make the playoffs and do some damage) would vault him to #3 all time, over randy moss. 700 after that (2017 season?) would pass terrell owens for second all-time.

in other words he needs 2000 yards. that's quite a feat at 36.

All Smith really needs to do is break 14,000 receiving yards and he's a HOF lock. He's already got another 4,000 all purpose yards in returns and kick offs. He's already an all time great he just needs to put up a couple hundred more yards to cement his legacy. I think that's all he's trying to do.

For the first time, he may actually have lost a step this time.

Achilles injuries are crucial. I still think he will be a good WR because of his ball skills and his intensity, but I think he will lose a step.

We will see him in the slot almost exclusively this year if Harbagh in not an idiot. Of course I could be wrong too.

A shame you may be correct.   He's been such a badass that even his haters futility cannot deny his ability.

Greatest Panther ever.   We pretty much should celebrate what he's done for this franchise every chance we get.

If not, then what's the angle?  Every thread about bringing him back may be a lost cause but what's sad is discounting his value to this franchise.

That doesn't make sense...  And, again, pathetic....  10, 12, 40 years in..   Tell me why I'm wrong..

Lol at the doubt he returns to form, at this point some of you are salty. he was playing out of his mind before injury even if he loses a step, the same one most said he lost in 2013 he is still going to be damn near dominant

just quit talking about smittys speed he's hasn't been that guy for a while, if you actually watch him play you would know his game now is about pure separation.

i already expected him to be back, smittys work ethic is ridiculous

i love smitty & I miss him being a Panther....Getty did what was best for our team, but I sure wish more of our players (see Jonathan Stewart/Charles Johnson) had this man's heart & fighting spirit

I would not say gutting the entire receiver squad including a top WR who saved you next to nothing is best for any team wanting to stay at the top of the league (The OL and DB experiments were horrid too). Just be glad Cam Newton, Jonathan Stewart and Greg Olsen were already here, or those stunts would have set the Panthers back for years.

So glad there is no "throw me the goddamn ball" personalities on this team.

I believe that is exactly what this team is missing on offense to make it complete. Outside of the QB you need to have one player who has that attitude to demand respect and come through in the clutch because they know they can beat anyone on that field when the game is on the line.

I really agree with CPantherKing .. There really hasn't been a competitor with the heart and dominant personality that Steve Smith had since he left. Some might argue that you're better off without that type of player, but I also believe that's a huge factor that differentiates a great WR from just a decent or good WR.

I think Cam is literally one "great" player away from making the panthers unstoppable offense. I really hope the Panthers organization eventually finds one or two players of that caliber ! If we're lucky Funchess or Benjamin could become that player but at this point neither of them have that dominant competitor personality.

It's also HUGE to have that kind of player when you go up against great defenses in the playoffs like we will most likely against Seahawks and Cardinals. Just a "decent" or "good" recieving core is eventually going to burn you IMHO.
