DEFENSE?

I see lots of people questioning our defense.. Did yall watch the same game I did? We gave up 20 points, 7 being on a play that probably should have been an INT.. Luke was caught in a position were he couldnt really jump and Coleman fell down. The problem yesterday was the inability of the OFFENSE to get the ball down the field! I cant remeber seeing any plays down the field yesterday, and normally there are 3 or 4 times we go deep.. Not sure what the problem was, but it was apparent the O didnt do its job yesterday.. I think we abandoned the run game a little to much. CAP was running pretty good IMHO.. We scored 13 points against the FALCONS, are you serious?/

I understand why you say that.. But if you look at the stats on paper, we had 6 QB hits, 6 TFL, and 2 sacks.. we gave up just over 300 yds in the air, 70 of that was on 1 play. And we had 2 guys in position just didnt make the play. I do agree we need to get more from the edges but the loss yesterday was purely on play-calling. Cam didnt have it yesterday, and we should have handed the ball of more to get the pressure off him. CAP had a 9.8 yds per carry avg.. but only had 5 carries? We ran the ball 20 times? We obviously were getting nothing down the field. If we can get the LBS to freeze or have to get in the box maybe we could have gone over the top? We  scored 13 points on the FALCONS??? That is a joke!

The problem I saw with the Defense yesterday were the missed tackles, no pressure on the QB, and their inability to get off the field on 3rd down.  ATL's conversion rate was in the neighborhood of 60% IIRC.  Luke and TD were missing tackles, and how often do we see that happen?  If you pressure Ryan he will make mistakes, if you give him the time we gave him yesterday he and his receivers will hurt you.  I other big thing that hurt us yesterday was Peanut's penalty in the first quarter.  I think it changed the whole complexion (or atleast set the tone) of the game.  Not saying I blame Peanut as the receiver went low on him, but something just seemed different with the unit after that happened.

I agree with your feelings about the offense.  It's not every game you see Norwell put on his butt, but it happened yesterday.  They pressured Cam, got him out of rhythm, and we never recovered.  I wonder if Ginn's injury was a reason we didn't seem to throw the deep ball yesterday, I dunno, but we sure didn't go to it any.

Lick your wounds, get ready to win HFA next week.

The Giants and Falcons ran the ball on us.  Tampa Bay and Doug Martin will do the same thing if we can't get more disciplined......If we can't stop the run effectively, then we are in deep poo once the playoff begin.  I'm hoping the reason is because we are such a physical team, that we are simply a little worn out from the grind and the bye week will allow us to get rested and rejuvenated.   CJ, TD, and Luke all whiffed on Freeman in the backfield yeasterday but the biggest disappointment was our d-line letting the Falcons O-line peel off and get blocks on our LBers.  KK was the only D-lineman playing worth a damn yesterday.

Well the offense spent most of the day watching the Falcons offense execute drives that lasted damn near a whole quarter

In return, we should have run it back down their throat! We ran the ball "20" times.. We averaged right at 8 yds a carry!! We handed the ball off to RB 12 times, 12 times.... That is just pitiful!!

There is more to the game than points allowed, it's only a portion.  What helps make the panthers defense so good is the fact that our offense sustains drives, controls the clock and prevents the other team from getting into a rhythm on offense.  When you look at the game, they only scored 20 points yes, but on only 9 possessions (3 fewer than the average NFL game).  Also factor in the fact that we forced 1 punt the entire game and got dominated in TOP and our defense did not pass the eye test of a good defense.

Fact of the matter is that this is the case of a games score not matching the reality of the field.  Our defense is Far more of a concern right now than our offense because we need a top 5 defense if we are going to win the superbowl, it's just how the team is built.

3rd downs - 9/15

TOP - 35:38

Defense couldn't get off the field and the 3rd down conversion rate was worse until they were trying to burn clock.

Matt Ryan was 23/30 with 2 of those being throwaways and 2 of them being drops. We gave up over 80% adjusted completion percentage. That is miserable.

They averaged 6.0 yards per play when our average on the year was around 4.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
