Rules question

So, the NFL rules and regs state that a defender has a 5 yard cushion where contact with a receiver is allowed. Teams are starting to put their best WR in the slot and run him across the field to get him open. What would happen if, within that 5 yard cushion, one of our linebackers pops that WR and puts him on his back? Not talking ear-holing a guy, just a hard bump that would make him at least stumble a bit, thus disrupting the timing, allowing for coverage to focus elsewhere and give our pass rush an added couple of seconds to get to the QB.

Think of this the same way that the concept of tackling a RB on play action works. A lot of play-action passes require the RB to fake the handoff, then slip through the line and run a route. Tackling that player at the line is legal, as there was playaction, thus making it impossible for a defender to KNOW that he doesn't have the ball. I'm not saying tackle the WR, but a good pop much the same as TEs receive.

Within 5 yards, pop the guy. As long as the ball is not in the air.

Play action and screens are iffy. You can knock the RB down. You just have to make sure it's before the pass. Although, that is a tough call by the ref.

Also. Let's talk about the defer. The winner of the coin toss gets to choose between receiving the ball, or kicking off. (Or deferring to the second half)

Glad I could be here.

Speaking of rules, shouldn't have Odell been penalized for taking his helmet off while running around in the field?  I thought that was no no.

Yeah, that's supposed to be an unsportsmanlike penalty.

from a coverage perspective unless it's a running play and he's a blocker, you risk creating a gap in coverage just to take a guy out (what the hell's your nickel corner gonna do while your OLB wipes him out?)

but that aside, if you just level a guy just to level him it can still be a personal foul regardless of how far inside the 5-yard buffer it is. the buffer zone is a contact space; just because it's legal to contact a guy within those five yards doesn't mean any contact is allowed.

if it was then thomas davis would be a convicted serial killer.

I can agree with this without the snarky part.

Yes, and by the way he wasn't the only player on the field that did it. I re-watched that game today, there was another player that did as well, during all the melee.

There is also something else that I think that has been over looked. The very first pass to Beckham in the game was up the middle and broken up by Luke, a like backer by the way. Luke drew a penalty on that play and saved a potential TD and I could tell Beckham was frustrated by that coming from Luke. The media match up all week was portrayed as a Norman vs Beckham match up and I don't think he expected it to come from Luke and in my opinion that set the tone for Beckham. Norman only added fuel to the already burning flame after that. Luke busted his ass right out of the gate within the first two minutes of the game. Something to think about.
