My prediction for Sunday

Mr. Scot

Nothing at all, I just stated that I believe facing a top 5 run defense may be harder to run against than a top 25 or top 30 defense. Who knows, they may succeed and if they do, I will be impressed.

Had a vague memory of this and checked a You Tube clip to be certain.

The MNF crew stated that Tampa was the #4 defense in the league at the time we faced them. They also made mention that no team had allowed fewer trips into the Red Zone to that point.

But how did the Giants get that top 5 rushing defense? One way they obtained that ranking is not playing anyone that is a top 5 rushing offense. The highest ranked rushing offense they've played was Baltimore (6th). Then the only other team that they've played that is ranked in the top half of the league in rushing offense was the Washington Redskins. That's it. We have played against the top rushing offense, Atlanta (twice), and the third highest rushing offense, Minnesota. The Giants are tied for first place in rushing offense, so after this weekend we will have played against 3 of the top 5 rushing offenses. Eight of the games we've played have been against teams that are in the top half of the league in rushing. The Giants have played only 3 games against teams that are in the top half of the league in rushing offense.

The Bucs had the 9th ranked rushing defense entering the Monday night game agaisnt Carolina and had the 4th rank overall defense.

The Giants had and have a better ranked rush defense but the numbers between the Giants and Bucs were fairly close before the Monday night game. But don't forget that the Bucs pass defense was ranked 2nd at that time. Carolina's run game is very dependant on the passing game, primarily play action, and containing the running game also includes stopping Steve Smith.

I respect the Giants defense but to say that the Panthers offensive performance agaisnt the Bucs isn't a indicator that they can do the same to the Giants just isn't completely logical. The difference between the Giants and Bucs is the ability to get pressure on the QB and getting into the backfield. As the Giants run the same type of offense as the Panthers, they would be the first to know that when done correctly, play action can slow a defense like the Giants down considerably. If Delhomme doesn't have one of his "games" this game will come down to the offenses making plays, not the defenses.

In all fairness, Tampa Bay may have been 4th by the time the Panthers showed up, but their DLine was hurting. Two of their key linemen were out and they had to start Ryan Sims - not exactly a known run-stopper.

I've never seen holes open that big for any running back that wasn't playing in a bad high school game. Just unreal stuff.

But JRs point is taken. The Panthers really have yet to face a team with the HEALTHY talent that the Giants are going to field Sunday night. I don't expect a Tampa game, but I would expect the Giants are going to be facing one of their toughest running tests.

The number 4 rushing defense or the number 4 overall defense? Regardless, their run defense was ranked in or around the low 20's when you guys met them and they had a couple of key injuries that game also.

Look, this is a prediction thread right?....all I ws saying is that I predict the Panthers running game may find it harder to run this week than the recent defenses they have matched up against. that is all.....Not bashing the Panthers running game at all because even a fool can see that it is top notch right now.

Top ten actually. See the breakdown above (mountainpanther fan has the details).

And I'd have to check, but I believe Barret Robbins isn't 100% for this game, so it could be a very similar situation. Also, as mentioned, you do have to factor Steve Smith into the matchup.

Bottom line for me: I have no idea what's about to happen on Sunday, but I don't put a whole lot of stick into rankings. As was pointed out above, you can be really highly ranked, but suspect, if you face weak opponents.

Only things I think can definitively be said: Their defense has been playing well. Our offense has been playing well. Sunday, it'll all come down to the matchups, and I'm not even going to try to predict how that will play out.

In comparing the Giants and Bucs, I think it's only fair to bring up weather. Tampa stuffed the Panthers running game when it was 90 degrees out. When the thermometer dipped below 50 they looked like they couldn't tackle me.

The Giants won't have that same issue. Not saying Carolina won't have success running the ball. But Tampa looked like a bunch of softies out there against Carolina on Monday night.
