An Update On The Greatest Offense In Panthers History

After our 9th victory I declared this the greatest offense in Panthers history. This Sunday will end any debate when the Panthers score 11+ points to become the most prolific team in franchise history. I shake my head when I think about it. I've never appreciated Mike Shula as a coordinator or even a QB coach. But the results are in. Cam Newton is beating teams with his mind. They fear him physically and he smells it. Stack the box, double Olsen, he will check into a Mike Tolbert swing pass that goes for 15...or a Ted Ginn bomb for 48. This offense is an unstoppable force. They stop scoring when they want to stop scoring which was the 3rd quarter this past week. 

Early in Cam's career we often talked about how the team could not win if he had even one turnover. Against the Seahawks, Saints, and Eagles the Panthers lost the turnover battle a combined 8-2. Didn't matter, 3-0 in those games. Cam Newton has been sacked 24 times in 13 games this year. He was sacked 38 times in 14 games last year. Many heap praise on the O-line and they should. But Cam is making quick decisions and moving better in the pocket. He's been terrific about throwing the ball away with his much maligned passing percentage. I'll take that no gain over a -8 any day. Did you guys see that clown Bradford this weekend?

Media and fans don't want to accept this offense is a "juggernaut" because we don't throw for 5k yards and 50 touchdowns. But we can't be stopped, that is what a juggernaut truly is. We don't look like other offenses. That doesn't make us lesser, it makes us special.

 

How many teams can score these many ways?

great read. i'm excited to close out this season and start compiling stats to see where this offense ranks against all-time greats. even if it's not numerically comparable it's still gotta be historic... hell, if cam accounts for 45 total touchdowns by season's end that alone is historic. that's gotta be some top-five poo. brady set the record at 50, right? those were all passing touchdowns. did he have a rusher that year?

On top of the best Offense in team history, if we continue on our pace of 18 ppg, we'll give up a total of 299 points making this thie 4th best defensive unit we've ever fielded.  The other 3 sub 300 point defensive teams all were playoff teams, 2 went to conference championships and lost, the difference between years past and this year is that BOTH our offense and defense are Elite.  This really is our year, let's not let this slip away.

 

One other thing in the stats you posted, I saw the other day that stuck out to me, While Deangelo Williams is our all time leading rusher, Stewart has now lead the panthers in rushing in a season more than any other running back in team history.  Stewart lead our team in rushing yards 4 times (including this season), D-will and Foster both lead our team in rushing 3 times.  I just thought that was a weird stat.

This has certainly been the most dynamic and hardest to defend offense we've ever had.  We can literally score from ANYWHERE on the field.  I don't know if we could say that in years past.  I would hate to be a defensive coordinator having to come up with a game plan.

And you know what's probably going to be lost in all this when somebody is looking back years from now?  How we did this without our top wide receiver and no true #1 or #2 receiver, and the worst OC ever known to mankind.  Ginn and Philly should be the third and fourth option.  Funchess has a real chance to be a legit option at #2, hell maybe even the #1 position but right now he's still developing.

 

BTW...I was being facetious with the OC comment but you know some people here still harbor those feelings.

What's most surprising to me is that Rivera's teams own 5 of the top 10 in our Team's history in scoring offense.

Cam Newton is making our recievers servicable right now. The only elite pass catcher he has is Greg Olsen. But Cam has been great about getting into the correct playcall vs. the defense. He is getting guys open with tactics then throwing them open with touch. Our offensive line isn't the best in my opinion but they are consistent. That allows Cam to make great decisions.

Unfortunately its pretty hard to find total TDs as a stat, but Manning holds the record at 55 passing, plus 1 rush TD that year. The year Brady had 50, he also had 2 rush TDs.
