Since merger, only the '72 Dolphins and '96 Packers have finished #1 in offense and defense. We now have a shot

We're first in point differential now: we're averaging 31.6 points per game on offense, we're giving up 18.7 points on defense. We rank #1 on offense, tied for #4 on defense. Denver is #1 giving up 17.3 points a game on defense.

Just another way that we're looking at a historically great season. I think this is yet another thing that's in reach. If only Drew Brees hadn't fuged us up in the Superdome last week, this would be a damn shoo-in after today.

Realistically, we'd have to allow less than 21 points combined against all three of our remaining opponents to have a shot at the #1 defense.  If we shut out the rest of our opponents, we'd be at about 15.75 points allowed per game on defense.  Allowing 21 points total in our next three games puts us at just over 17 points allowed per game on the year.

I don't see this happening, unless the Giants and Bucs poo the bed.

The Broncos play:

  • @ Steelers
  • vs Bengals
  • vs Chargers

So there's a chance they give up a few more points than their average.

But the other two teams ahead of us...

The Cincinatti Bengals play:

  • vs 49ers
  • @ Broncos
  • vs Ravens

Doesn't look like the Bengals give up many more points than their average

The Seahawks play:

  • vs Browns
  • vs Rams
  • @ Cardinals

Only the Cardinals are a real threat to put up some points.
