I read an article yesterday that stated it would not be an open world game. If it's an on rails experience like XII, I don't know if I even want to bother with it. They're changing too much.

Nowhere in that article does it say it won't be open world.  The only time the map layout is even mentioned, and it explicitly says "info on the map cannot be provided yet", is:

  • Info on the map cannot be provided yet, but the team isn’t worrying on whether it’s considered an open world or sandbox or not. Nomura-san is more interested in focusing on the environments and in showing how characters affect them.

And like shred said, other than the deceptive world map (which you were forced to follow along a certain path on rails for the majority of the game) FF7 wasn't all that non-linear until you got the Highwind, whereas even then there were only a few side quests such as the Weapons, Knights of the Round, etc.  Level, weapon and materia grinding just made it seem a lot less linear than it actually was.

Chrono Trigger, FF4 and FF6, which were all on the Super Nintendo, were all far more non-linear games.  Chrono Trigger especially, where you get large chunks of the map available to you from the get go and tons of sidequests to branch off to over the course of the game.

It's still a great game and one of my favorite games of all time, but man, it seems like people are really misremembering how it actually was.  Just like everyone fussing about it not being turn based... lol FF7 wasn't even turn based in the first place unless you manually went to the options and changed the default settings to make it turn based yourself.  FF7 was active time battle... which is apparently what the remake is supposed to be too, just an extremely souped up version of it.

I've beaten FF7 more times than I can count, so trust me, I'm not "misremembering" anything. I'm of the opinion that it's not a linear game. I never said the article stated it was going to be on rails; just simply expressing hope that it won't be.

I've played the demo of Final Fantasy 15,and I really like it, so if it's anything close to that I'll be happy. My main issue is with it being episodic. I'd rather just wait longer and play the game all at once.

Everyone worried about the "episodic release" like it's short Telltale like releases, don't.  It's confirmed to be a multi-part game series of full length games... not episodic like was initially reported for whatever reason (mistranslation?).  They reference the XIII series as a release model for people to expect such as XIII, XIII-2, and XIII-3.  So basically... what they're aiming for is one full FFVII game per every disc for the original FFVII back on PS1.

Sort of like the Mass Effect trilogy.
