The game looks great and I can't wait to play it.  It looks like they got rid of the turn based fighting system.  I'm kind of old school, so I guess turn based rpgs are officially dead.

Yeah, I actually miss the Turn based games, have more time to plan an attack and combine for combos, the good old days, maybe they will realize that the last great JRPG was FFX and it was completely turn base.

but with that said this game looks great and cannot wait. it's my #1 game for next year, and nothing else is close(I do have Fallout 4 this year tho).

Yeah i wish there were more turn based rpgs. I suppose studios think they won't sell? Kinda hard to use that as a excuse when no triple a developer has attempted it this and last console generation. There are ways to modernize turned based rpgs. Switching party members like ffx, combining special moves into one like chrono trigger, maybe fuse material to more powerful versions, able to use abilities outside of combat to find hidden secrets, etc.

I don't think it is completely outdated like what most people spew online. It can still work just need the right studio to come along.

What sucks is this remake will be episodic. That could mean multiple things though. I assume it won't be like the telltale games where every episode together will retail for $60. Instead it will be broken up into multiple games retailing for 60 but will more content each. I can imagine that Midgar could take one whole game to get through.

Breaking it into "episodes" is smart. It also allows the studio to take it's time instead of rushing a bad game out to appease fans. I assume each game released will be about as long as something like The Last of Us was, or Uncharted. Maybe a bit more. And since it is more RPG and mini-game based than story based, each game will actually have more hours worth of content. So you're looking at a 30-40 hours worth on each game, if we're lucky. Hopefully they break it up to one release every year or so, so that gives you time to sink your teeth into it. I'll take it.

FF7 was probably the greatest digital RPG ever. If they update the graphics and not change anything else, they'll have a winner on their hands. Turned based, though, is a must. It just makes for a better, more casual and enjoyable game. There's enough out there for the Red Bull twitch reflex guys, just go with what worked before.

And I'm not sure it isn't turn based. Those attack sequences looked like some of the special multi-attack moves from the original. One can hope, I guess.

This is the one game that would finally push me over the edge to buy a PS4. I hardly ever console anymore, so up until now, it's been a waste of money for me to buy any next gen.

Fallout 4, SW Battlefront, and now this? Hmm... might be time to pick up another console.

You guys do know that FF7 was ATB (active time battle) based, right?  It wasn't your standard turn based JRPG (not by default anyways, though you could turn off ATB).  Character's attack gauges filled up over the course of time, and enemies would attack you if you just waited around forever.

This remake was stated in an interview to be a form of ATB as well, just a completely modernized version of ATB with an updated combat engine.  Watch the video and look at the character's health bar, etc.  You've got your limit break meter, your health/MP, and an ATB "wait" gauge, just like in the old FF7.

Can't really tell from the clip, but it's probably something like you attack a certain amount with one character depending on how much his wait gauge has filled up, then switch to the next character and use up his attack gauge as well.  So basically, just like old FF7.  Just with a complete makeover and modernized for next gen systems.

There are.  Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity get rave reviews on PC.  Divinity is on consoles now.  Then of course you have X-Com and the new one out, Hard West, etc.  Most are on PC though.  They are bringing it back.

I read an article yesterday that stated it would not be an open world game. If it's an on rails experience like XII, I don't know if I even want to bother with it. They're changing too much.

FF7 wasn't really that open worldish to begin with. Explore town, dialog, fight a monster, leave town, follow a path that leads to another town or dungeon, repeat. You had to get the buggie to go through sand, broken plain to go through shallow water, sub, and then airship. It wasn't until disk 3 that you got airship that you could go anywhere, and by that point you already explored 99 percent of the towns/dungeons and you just needed to get to the last area to battle sephiroth to end the game. The game was linear, just the world map made it seem like it wasn't.

To me, an open world is one that I am free to roam, which you can do in FF7 original. Once you leave Midgar you can walk all over the map.

You can't walk over the map though. You need different transportations and in order to progress you have to go to certain areas.. Only areas to explore after midgar is a town where cloud tells the party of what went wrong 5 years ago(need to do it as you can't progress further), a cave, golden saucer, and carol.  Once you reach Carol there is a small riverbed you can't cross without a car. In order to get it you have to go to golden saucer.

Which is true, but I'm free to roam the areas available to me based on what vehicles I have in the overworld. You can't do that in XIII, which is one of the many reasons it sucked; it was completely linear. I don't want the re-make to be like that. I want a world map, or something similar to XV.
