The Panthers offense needs 33 points on Sunday to overtake the Cardinals for the #1 offense in the NFL

Greg Cosell did a good breakdown of our offense.

The Carolina Panthers have become a very difficult offense to defend, for a number of reasons.

The Panthers use a lot of multiple run game concepts. They have expansive pass game concepts. And quarterback Cam Newton makes it all work, thanks to his unique skill set.

Newton’s ability to run off designed misdirection and deception elements in the running game is a bedrock foundation of the offense. And his ability to make tough throws from the pocket allows the Panthers to attack the intermediate and vertical levels in the passing game.

The Panthers scored 41 points, had 497 yards and stayed undefeated with a win Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Newton was again outstanding in the fourth quarter, hitting 9-of-13 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. And he was good against the blitz too, hitting 10-of-15 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Newton has 11 touchdowns against the blitz this season, tied with the Oakland Raiders Derek Carr for the NFL lead.

We could see in the win against the Saints how everything in the Panthers’ offense works together.

Quote

Newton also has a power arm that opens up the Panthers passing game downfield. Early in the fourth quarter, on a first and 20, Newton made a great throw to Greg Olsen. The Saints had a “Cover 2” zone with Anthony opening to Olsen. As the coverage developed it became Olsen one-on-one against Anthony so Newton turned it loose, and it was a great pass away from Anthony.

Quote

The Saints showed Newton and the Panthers a lot of different coverage looks, with multiple man and zone concepts, and the Panthers figured out ways to beat them all. With all the various looks the Panthers present in the pass game and the run game, and with a multi-talented quarterback running them, Carolina is presenting many challenges to opposing defenses.

Doubters/Uninformed casual fans: "Panthers are overrated. Keep Cam in the pocket, double Olsen, and stack the box."

Unless NE puts up more. I do think we'll put up 33 fairly easily at home whether with defensive scores or whatnot and I don't think NE puts up even 20 without Gronk (i know he may play but they said if he does it'll be very limited snaps) against Houston so I think we have a good shot at being the #1 O.

If you look back to 2013, we really struggled against 3-4 defenses (@Arizona, @49ers, @New Orleans, home vs New Orleans, 49ers in the playoffs). One of the biggest reasons for our offensive success this year is the remarkable improvement our offense has made against 3-4 defenses.

Credit goes to:

  • Gettleman for building the best interior line in the NFL and finding solid OTs in the bargain bin
  • Matsko for coaching Norwell and Turner up
  • Rivera for deciding to roll with the no huddle offense
  • Shula for letting Cam have the freedom to make adjustments and choose plays based on the defense.
  • Cam for improving his footwork, poise in the pocket, and improved ability to read defenses pre-snap and post-snap.

It really was night and day and as a casual fan kind of confusing in 2013 to see how our offense did really well against 4-3 but horribly vs 3-4, even when some of the 4-3 had better over ranks as a unit and/or bigger names.

Wow, big point difference between the top three and those out of the top ten, impressive!

Still, no one in the media likes to talk about it.

This morning, Sean O'Hara (of NFL Network) talked about the "offense" following the New Orleans win, and he focused on the "run game" which was middling, but solid.. .

So, they just keep reinforcing that stereotype, even when they focus on the offense. SMH

Nonetheless, good luck to the team today.

Huh!? The PPG stats, that get published every week? That's what you're talking about? LOL

FWIW: It was the Panthers that released that information regarding-needing 33 pts a game to over take the scoring lead.

More importantly: I brought up Sean O'hara, cause he was talking about the "offense" and never once mentioned them #3 in scoring, then proceeded to focus on the "run game" aspect of the New Orleans win, which was minor.

Very exciting if we can take over the top spot in the offense rankings!  Go Panthers!!

Earlier this year, during training camp when i was first creating some of my Panthers databases, I happened to compile the stats on our offensive and defensive rankings over time, via PFR.  It's very rare that we've had a top 10 ranked offense, at least in terms of year-end stats.  We've only had a TOP 5 offense by points scored in two seasons:  1999 and 2011.  By contrast, we've had a top 5 D 4 seasons.
