Austin, TX- what to do

Everyone is going to be at Zilker Park for the Trail of Lights on Saturday so definitely avoid that area.  Depends on what kind of music you like and where you'll be staying for good recommendations.  I'm assuming you're staying somewhere downtown.  The Continental Club on South Congress is a good place to start for music - one of Austin's oldest venues.  The whole SoCo area is sort of touristy and has some decent restaurants, a good area to check out for a first timer.  Nick Foles's (the QB) family owns Hopdoddy, a trendy burger restaurant in that area, but unless you like waiting in line for 30 minutes to get a burger it's not that great.

If you really want to dive into the mess, go to (Dirty) 6th Street where they block off the road after 10pm.  But it being December it probably won't be that crazy.  If you're into dive bars and cheap/strong drinks, I recommend Side Bar on 7th and Red River.  There's a few decent venues within walking distance of Side Bar to go after getting a few drinks in - Mohawk is cool, my roommate's band is playing there on Saturday night.  Empire Control Room is right next door.  Sidewinder is a new-ish spot that has rock music, they're all pretty close to each other.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

@hepcat thanks for the info

6th St and Side Bar sound like my kind of stuff

Also, I'm thinking of checking out Uchi for some sushi. Seems highly regarded online.

Uchi is great, although very expensive and swanky.  I haven't been there in awhile, I think it might be reservation only.  But you can sit at the bar if it's just you.

And yea, 6th St. is where the crazy happens.  Just in the past two months we've had Shia Labeouf and Johnny Manziel make fools of themselves down there haha

How was the trip @Cary Kollins

It was awesome....just too short. Actually didn't make it out to any venues besides the Moody Theater. I play in an 80s cover band (Spazmatics...heard of'em?) and we played for Cirrus Logic's holiday party there...pretty freaking awesome. We just stayed at the party until around midnight and crashed at the hotel, then flew out the next morning.

Next time I hope to do a proper trip and see as much as possible.

yeah, it's kind of a crazy concept...like a theater troupe/band. The Austin chapter is so popular they actually have two versions now. So Cirrus Logic booked "the spazmatics", and the local guys were already booked so we flew out from NC for the gig.

That's awesome though!  Hope you make it back to Austin with more time next time

    • looking forward to us getting at least above 16 again. We've been there before, we'll be there again
    • Smitty probably envies a 6-5 guy and sees him taking his gifts for granted.   He had to work his butt off to play outside at 5-9.  I think perspective has a lot to do with his evaluation. TMac played on a bad team.  He was on the field a lot.  Maybe he makes an assumption when he states that TMac loafed when the ball was not coming to him. Maybe he was advised to catch his breath during those plays--conditioning, coaching, etc. could have been an influence.  Smitty can say what he sees, but not why he sees it, if that involves assessing TMac's mindset.
    • Steve Smith has a dislike of tall receivers. I feel like Smith's main purpose is to boost up small, lesser-known receivers. Every time I've heard T-Mac speak, he just seems to have that it-factor vibe. I love how natural of a catcher he is. He's going to make some fascinating plays that's for sure.
