Another big potential milestone Cam can reach this year

Haven't heard this mentioned much, if at all... but Cam has the chance to pass Peyton Manning for #1 all time in yards for a QB through their first 5 seasons this year.  He moved into 2nd place a month or so ago, passing up both Matt Ryan and Dan Marino.

He's currently 904 yards off from Manning with 4 games to go... he would need to average right over 226 YPG the rest of the season to get it, which is very do-able.

Peyton Manning 5 seasons: 21,174

Cam Newton 5 seasons (so far): 20,270

If Cam hadn't missed those 2 games last year he'd without a doubt get it

I've been tracking this since Cam passed Marino & Ryan to get into 2nd place on this list.  Earlier in the season, I hadn't thought it would be possible he'd get ahead of Peyton, but the games against Washington and the Saints have really brought this within reach.  I so hope he'll do this, along with breaking Steve Young's record for most games with passing & rushing TDs.

I assume that this stat only includes regular season games, not postseason?  Because obviously, you throw in two playoff games and a Superbowl, and Cam owns this stat BIG TIME.

Hmmmm... that gets me thinking.  Here's something that would be an interesting stat to look up:  How many QBs won their division / took their teams to the playoffs in 3 of their 1st 5 seasons?  Anyone know where to find that info?

So, Cam is 195 yards away from this mark with 2 games left.  Pretty safe to say he's got this one in the bag unless he just barely plays at all the next 2 games for whatever reason.

Cam can fall forward every play for the next two games and get that.

    • Karlaftis and Danna have been pretty inconsistent so teams have been doubling Jones and able to contain their pass rush.   But the good thing is that yesterday, we schemed well against Steve Spags Defense, Canales married the surrounding personnel with his QB through play designs within his comfort zone and was able to get downfield at will.  He was able to execute higher difficulty throws and look a lot more comfortable.  It tells me that Canales has a good system in mind, and had an edge gameplanning wise against Spagnuolo - which is nice to see.  It's a bit to see-saw at times with either going way too pass heavy or way too run heavy, but I think he's finding out what works.  It takes time to have it come together, and sure, I could see regression happen against a better front-7, but this was good for the entire system gelling.
    • This was evident first two weeks of season. I don’t see any issues with physical tools since he came back. I think he is a player that must play with confidence to overcome those size limitations and he’s doing that.
    • Still 3-10 on passes over 15 yards.  At least he's not scared to merely attempt them anymore.  Where I see improvement is the 10-15 yard range.  He was 6-6.  Bryce of old was scatter shot on anything beyond 10 yards and the further out, the worse the accuracy.
