PFF Showing Cam some MVP Love

Worth the read.

TLDR:

Quote

There are quarterbacks in the NFL who help their running game by being efficient or elite passers. There are those that can help it by being a threat to break the pocket and run, or by the threat they pose as part of the read-option looks they show—but there are none that form such an integral part of the run game as Newton.

This is why Newton has a legitimate MVP case, even if his numbers won’t ever match those of Tom Brady when it comes to passing. Newton isn’t just executing a successful passing attack with a group of bit-part or cast-off receivers, but he is making his own life easier in the passing game with the unique threat he poses as a runner. He’s acting as his own Adrian Peterson or Marshawn Lynch—an elite running weapon that teams need to devote extra attention to, which opens up the passing game.

Quote

Cam Newton may be the league’s biggest matchup problem, most unique weapon, and pose more questions to a defense than any other player in the NFL. While Tom Brady or Carson Palmer may be the best quarterbacks this season, it’s tough to argue with the idea that Newton is the most valuable, because of how completely he determines the success of this offense in both the passing and running game.

Except Cam's #s WILL eventually reach those of Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Favre, etc. He has two 5 TD games this year with these receivers... Just wait until KB is back and we continue to improve our talent on offense through the draft/FA. And Cam will continue to develop and get even better. We'll see him put up a 60 TD season in the next 5 years. He may not put up 5000 passing yards but that's because of the philosophy of the offense we're running (we run more than we pass) not because he's incapable of doing so. He's the only consideration for MVP this year.

Cam for MVP.

PFF says, "While Brady and Palmer may be the best quarterbacks this season...".

They should have said "...the best passers this season...".

Cam has been the best quarterback this season, period. No contest.

They haven't even been better passers.

Exactly, thought the same thing as soon as I read it.

A less mobile QB, more dependent on their passing skills is not necessarily a "better QB".

The main problem with their metric is that they don't weight the plays (enough). Two bad overthrows followed by a 12 yards completion will net you negative points, even though you get the first down same as if you throw the completion on first down.

Basically you get good indication on the average performance per play, which is an excellent measurement for an offensive lineman, but not how much you helped your team to win, so it sucks for qbs.

Can someone post our PFF grades on O and D for the season?

Do you mean the "player grades" (the 0 - 100 score) they now use?   Or the premium stats?

I can post the player grades.  Don't have access to the premium stats.

I'll post the player grades later today in the week 13 stats & analysis thread.
