The Time Has Come

its real simple....

jake can't perform under pressure. all he knows to do it throw the ball up to steve smith. other teams have caught on to that. they put 8 or 9 in the box and rush. if its a run, they stop the run, if its a pass, the pressure jake into throwing an interception, or get the sack, or knock the ball out of his hands because he can't hold onto it.

playing defense against the panthers offense is simple! hell, i could be a defensive CO against the panthers, just dial up blitzes the whole game and you'll win!

The problem isn't age or experience. Most quarterbacks lose something as they get older but it is compensated by experience recognizing coverages and making smart plays. What is disturbing is that he seems to be making the same mistakes he made earlier in his career after improving in 2006 and 2007. He still gets happy feet and refuses to just throw the ball away. All the moving around in the pocket he did well in the first drive, he didn't do later on. I suppose old habits are hard to break.

that is spot on

They hired a guy specifically to break those habits this offseason.

And it worked in the first quarter. Problem seems to be that 5 or 6 years of doing it wrong is trumping the 6 months of practice doing it right once the bullets are flying. I suspect if he isn't under that much pressure this week, we might see the good Jake. If Abraham goes nuts again, we might see more of the same from Jake this week.

Possible. It's human nature, and things learned can be difficult to "unlearn".

I do suspect Jordan Gross is going to bring his A game this week. hopefully all the Uglys will.

Wouldn't hurt to do more timing passes, 3 step drops, shotgun and other things to slow down the pass rush. We had one series just before the half when we moved right down the field with little trouble. I wouls actually welcome some no-huddle and 2 minute drills during the game.

Agree on the no huddle. The quick pass thing bothers me though because it's the approach we took in 2006 (out of necessity with two starting Uglys down) and it largely neutered the offense.

Yesterday? Yeah, but we were obviously unprepared. The rest of the year? I hope not, because if we have to go that route it'll mean our O-Line is underperforming.

The quick pass is like the smoke route, it can used to gain yardage, keep the rush down, or set up something later on like a double move. You can't use it all the time because folks will just sit on routes and jump them. But in an obvious passing situation where you know they will blitz, why in the world you don't call more quick slant routes is beyond me.

Agree there.

Again, we just looked unprepared.

Quick Pass in 2006 also had shitty receivers and practically no viable running game. It took us a game entirely running the ball against Atlanta to get back into a semi groove of running the ball. I think we can work with 3 step drops and quick passing. The problem i see with jake is, he often steps back, holds the ball, and then fires. There's just too much going on back there. the thing I like about Matt Moore is, he drops back, finds an open receiver and shoots. Jake just looks like Byron Leftwich back there and with the time we had to throw against philly, that just won't work. I'm also thinking he's giving up some sort of clue when he breaks the huddle to let the defense know where he's probably gonna go with the ball (lolsmithobvslyamirite?)
