Is our special teams a liability?

Really, really bad idea.

Snapping the ball for FG's is an art that is learned and perfected over many years...that is why you have a guy that does nothing but that.

Do you realize the likely bad snaps that would happen by changing the distance between the long snapper and the holder?  Much higher chance for disaster than from a kick being blocked.

The long snapper hikes the ball to an area, there is no precision required. Adjusting the trajectory between FGs and punts is all he has to worry about. A FG snap has to be about 2 feet off the ground after 7 yards, a punt snap about 4 feet after 15 yards.

Its not something they could do in the middle of the season.  Timing is huge when it comes to kicking.  They practice getting the timing down over and over again.  Having the place holder a yard or two back would throw the kickers timing off.

The kicker tells the holder when he's ready. The holder turns and signals the LS that he's ready. The LS hikes when he feels ready. The kicker doesn't move until the holder gets the snap.

I was just watching a replay of one of Gano's field goals on youtube.  He definitely starts moving before the snap gets to the holder.

Football Outsiders has us ranked as 27th in Special Teams...

Our "special" teams are definitely living up to their namesakes...it seems that only Ginn is adept in the ST department.

The rest of our STers turned into 10 Brent Bersins. Basically the ol' switcheroo...we have the right returner, but that's all we've got.
