YAC

I have been screaming about this all year. I don't know if it is on Shula, Newton, or the WRs but it has got to stop.

Everything in our passing game comes off the right arm of Cam Newton. Yesterday, Ginn caught a ball on the last drive across the middle and in stride and tripped over his own feet.

I have seen countless times when Olsen catches the ball and there is no one 10 yards around him and he only gets 3 more yards.

Every WR that plays with Newton, except for Smith, simply catches the ball and then falls down. Our screen game is horrible.

Like I said, everything cannot come off the right arm of Newton in the passing game.

Brady has over twice as much YAC from his receivers as Cam, even with many of those shifty receivers who make plays with the ball in their hands being out recently. Cam has ONE player in the top 137, only Olsen. One of his starting receivers is LAST, the other being 144th. Brady has 3 better than our best in YAC and 5 better than our 2nd best and both of our starting WRs... Take away YAC and Cam has 1,971 passing yards and Brady has 2,232 passing yards, much closer #s.

Interesting stats, thanks.  And I know that our receivers are generally not strong in YAC, though somehow it's not stopping us from scoring this season!  Thankfully!

But I do have a question:  Am I correct that the rankings don't take into account the difference in number of passes but just focus on total YAC?  Given the difference in numbers of receptions, that makes comparing totals difficult.  (Obviously the YAC/reception figures are comparable).

Gronk has 57 receptions.  Olsen has 62, so they're pretty comparable.

But other than that...

Patriots as a team have 324 receptions for 3948 yards.

Panthers have 218 receptions for 2797 yards

So, I'm not sure how you can compare total yards after catch unless you adjust for the huge difference in # of catches.  We throw the ball less than any team.

Team Totals:

Panthers: 3.78899083 YAC/reception

Patriots: 5.18518519 YAC/reception

That's a huge difference. We're ranked 30th in YAC/reception as a team. Patriots are ranked 11th, though the difference between them and the ones above is not that much. And note that the YAC for the Pats as a team have gone down significantly since Lewis and Edelman and now Gronk went down. Just so happens they've lost the past 2 as well without those playmakers...

do you have a source for this? not doubting or anything but would like to see it.

You can also go to Yahoo's stats to see the actual YAC, but probably not rankings. Mind you that they may be able to be easier seen on a computer than phone (which may work in landscape mode).

@thomas96, It is definitely interesting to consider. I tend to take YAC into consideration when judging a receiver or unit as a whole, but never thought of it in terms of the MVP race. Suffice it to say that I think that everyone is making the best out of the situation---overcoming some shortcomings---from Cam to Shula on down, but especially Cam. We wouldn't be 12-0 without him and he is definitely coming through in the clutch, and he is doing something that many thought that he couldn't: "make his receivers better". He is thriving in this specific situation in a way that I don't believe any other QB in the league could. I believe he is the MVP based on this alone. That being said, like I alluded to earlier, it takes a team to win. I am proud of what this team has done, and everyone has played their part (including the receivers). But if we had a receiver that could make some guys miss though... :)

Good post for the most part. I was just talking about this with my co workers. We don't have wrs that get much yac, they don't bounce off or break tackles.  And as great as Olsen is he almost 100% of the time goes down at first contact, he has always been that way.
