Finnegan gets playing time, Bene a target

Hopefully he adjusts quickly and can give the secondary some help. Don't know what he has left in the tank. Jones needs to be a ST guy and backup. Obvious Brees was trying to pick on Bene and he did. He has his moments, but seems to be inconsistent. What do you guys think about Cortland playing a big role and Bene's play so far.

Benè hasn't been a liability to me. Colin has been bad because not only does he give up the play but it's normally wide open. I'm excited for Cortland to get back in the swing of things..  we need all the help we can get.

So serious question, I've seen a lot of people say Colin needs to be a ST guy and backup.  What does everyone mean by "backup"?  He was playing as a backup due to Peanut's injury.  You mean backup just at safety?

I think Bree's picked on everyone in the secondary yesterday, not just Bene, in all honesty it seemed to me he had a strong performance overall with a few run stops and pass break-ups.  Hopefully Tillman is showing promise and maybe gets back this week?

Brees had a typical good day in the dome. There have been times he was unstoppable there.  Teams for 2 weeks now have moved there best WR to the slot to hurt our defense.  At some point McDermott needs to figure out a way to stop that or its going to keep happening.

I don't think Norman looked much better than Bene.  Wasn't a good game for them.  Overall I think Bene has played well on the outside.

As much as it pains me, Brees is not "done" just yet.  He is still a very dangerous QB when he plays to the level of what he did yesterday.  Even Luke could only shrug his shoulders and say Brees is why the defense looked busted.

Anyone that was saying Brees was done in the offeseason was a moron. Even though his team sucked, he still was a good QB. He's still a good QB. He just can't be the only thing that carries the team even though he sure as hell tries.

As for Bene, he didn't look horrible to me at all. The defense itself looked out of sync and not on the same page. Safety play was suspect especially. Brees went after Harper hard.

Bene has as much responsibility as anyone in this defense.  He hasn't been terrible.  The other team is full of paid professionals too.  Drew Brees and Sean Payton know this team & defense and best how to attack it as anyone in the league.

The entire team was extremely sloppy in the context of how they have looked the majority of the year.  The entire secondary had gaffes and missed tackles yesterday, even Norman.  I don't think you can single any one person out.  To me, Roman Harper still stands out as the biggest liability in pass coverage.  The idea of him trying to cover the Cards receivers is scary.

But back to yesterday, a lot of that had to do with Drew Brees.  Their offense is not as explosive by any stretch as years past, but they would still be competing for the playoffs if they had any semblance of a defense at all.

I will echo about Brees not being done. When we had that thread floating around about him being done i said then it was stupid. He is not done and can still shred a defense. People who was saying he was done, was just hoping and wanting him to be done. Clearly that's not the case.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
