Michael Robinson on why many people hate Cam Newton

top dawg

Recommended Posts

I think people hate cam for a variety of reasons (Robinson's take being a big one) but I also think they hate him in the same way people "hate" Tom Brady.  You ask 10 huddlers if they hate brady and I guarantee 9/10 say they do.

Hell there were huddlers on here with the absurdity and lack of perspective to clown Jameis Winston about the crab leg incident.  And while it may be funny, we can't say squat about people hating on Cam while we are making fun of Winston.  Remember, people's first response about Cam is that he stole computers and took money to play at Auburn.  Yet we think its "funny" to continue similar rhetoric on Winston.

Then there's Brady, who's as cocky and emotional as they come.  He's a competitor and to many people he's a cheater (despite never being implicated).   But people still hate him, and he's as white as they come.

The ultimate reason people hate is because they don't have them.  Period.

Consider Mike Vick.  The NFL freaking loved this guy and he was truly a turd of a human being.  WE hated mike vick because we had to go against him.  And it just so happened that he was doing ridiculous things on the side.  So maybe the NFL/media still feel burned by Vick and maybe that's where Robinson's take is definitely valid.  But I think most people look at Cam like they look at Brady.  He's good, you can't stop him, and he knows it.  That's not a recipe for people to widely like him.

Consider this...if Cam was on another team would you like him?  I would like to think I would much like I like Brady, but who knows.  If he played for Atlanta we'd all probably hate him like everyone else, and cringe when he danced right in front of Luke in the end zone.  Think about that.

this is pretty much it.

if cam was white people would probably still have a problem with his personality but because he is black they say absolutely CRAZY poo.

the comments on that article are absolutely hilarious. White people hate being called out for their stupid behavior/comments. STOP PLAYING THE RACE CARD GEEEEEZ

You goaded me into reading the comments and there was your typical misinformed commentors, but this one commenter hit it out of the park IMO:

But listen to Robinson's point. He's not bringing up the "race card" as if to say it is white people hating on black people. That's not it at all. But it may still be about race. I've read articles and comments by people dissing on Cam because of showboating, dancing, smiling too much--and their point was that most great QBs of the past didn't do that, because not doing that somehow shows maturity. So, they conclude Cam shouldn't do those things and be like those other guys. But Cam comes from a background and environment that may be a little looser than that of the more tightly laced-up other QBs. Why? Perhaps because of race. For example, go to the typical church that has a majority of African Americans and compare that to the typical church that has a majority of white Americans. The emotional outpouring in the singing and the preaching and the response is typically greater in the predominantly black churches. Could you imagine some small-minded white person saying black churches shouldn't show emotions like that because look at all the white churches that don't? That would be idiocy--and that would be a race thing--and that would be wrong. So the media should quit writing article after article about how Cam should act when scoring. Commenters can shut up about him not being as dour as Johnny Unitas. Cam is Cam. His teammates consider him a great inspirational leader. His community sees him as a great charitable provider. People who know him like him. The only ones immature are those who whine about Cam--the leader, philanthropist, and inspiration--not acting like the other white guys that have played the position when they score.

Cam is black with a personality. It's acceptable to be a black QB as long as you act deferential and boring.

White with personality - great

White and boring - perfect

Black and boring - acceptable

Black with personality - thug

I've quoted myself but to say there was a time when posts like this got KT banned because it was taboo and it would set off giant arguments. Now I've gotten almost WHOLE PIE status from it. Because we're winning, Cam is doing great, but we still hear the same arguments. It's become way more clear to way more people what has gone on in the media regarding him.

I bet Cam has millions more white fans than black ones. I know at any home game the white folks cheering for Cam far outnumber the black ones. So it isn't even mostly a race thing. It is about him winning and being cocky. Because Cam doesn't act like a strret punk or dress like one like Vick did. Many of Cams shoes and clothing looks goofy and trend setting more than ethnic inspired. He dresses in what he likes.

Cam does what no other quarterback is doing and he is doing it with style. Traditionalists don't like it and let's be honest being a black freak of nature and a good quarterback isn't traditional. But Cam is breaking the molds and people don't like that. Traditionalists are mostly old white people

Are some folks racist and hate Cam because he is black? Yep. But don't fool yourself. They hate Russell Wilson too. And BTW, Russell Wilson is disliked by many black people for being too white and commercial. So it can happen on both sides.

There are lots of reasons to like or dislike Cam. And as he succeeds the noise will only get louder. I would hope one day we will have changed enough that the race card won't be easily accepted as the obvious answer to why a player is liked or not when someone throws it out there.

One thing about the discussion on Cam this morning on NFL Network (which prompted Robinson's comments). Billick based it on people not believing in Cam Newton (Is that you Billick)! But if I remember correctly, wasn't the 538 article based strictly off stats for the team as well as Newton?

If so, Billick started an argument that had nothing to do with what he said, and Robinson just jumped on it. Typical national media if you ask me. LOL

This is not to say that Cam's not liked because he's black by many people, many times. Sure it's the case. Absolutely! However, I'm not so sure 538 was one of those times (prompting this discussion this morning)??

one day...one glorious day...mankind will grow up and accept that people can dislike another person who is different color than them and it will be ok...sometimes people don't like other people...and mannerisms and cultural behavior is not going to be liked by everyone...and ITS OK...we are human beings and we share differences...and ITS OK TO DISLIKE CERTAIN THINGS

nobody is being oppressed here...nobody is being physically hurt...there is a great irony to knee jerk racial political correctness...

so the REAL problems are "the race card" and "racial political correctness"? Got it.

Anyway isn't it gameday? Let this poo die before it goes all tinderbox.

Good to see more of the media acknowledging this.

Of course the expected few posters will come in here blasting the mere existence of this discussion, but those are mostly the same people who not even 2 years ago would come into every Cam Newton thread complaining that there are too many threads about him. Like we shouldn't talk about our franchise quarterback.

You can read between the lines on a lot of this crap. It isn't flat out racism like people screaming the n word, but racial stereotypes, and undertones, like the towel thing that was a factor for wayyyyy too long. Quite a few people here for the longest time couldn't wait for Newton to make a mistake so they could say "I told you so". Posters who have been around for years know this. Delhomme was revered for his "fiery" attitude, and personality. Yet Newton is referred to as "cocky", and you hear people say that he should "tone it down", that doesn't add up to me.

People talk about how Newton has "matured", which yes he has, but at the end of the day, this very message board, and our fan base in general had to do a lot of "maturing" of it's own after we drafted a black quarterback. I'm just going to be brutally honest, and blunt about that. It's the truth. We've seen quite a bit of ignorance these last 4 years, luckily we have finally managed to weed out that element for the most part now.

The problem is that this is demonstrably false.

Pervasive stereotyping of different cultures leads to racial biases in society, which leads to continued oppression of certain races.

And it shows up constantly in sociological and psychological studies, as well as real world data.

Not bringing things like this to public consciousness allows that type of stuff to continue.

always try and be honest as you can be when discussing these things...if we are going to have this discussion that we all say we want to have regarding race, then we all have a responsibility to be honest...

do you have a different reaction to a black person with 'personality' than a white person?...if you say you don't see color I would respectfully say you are being dishonest...its unnatural to not judge others who are different...its in our DNA as human beings...one thing that annoys me and many others about liberals is they deny this...now what we do is knee jerk and scream racism aand shame on me for feeling this and saying that...but honesty is what we all need...and then we can have the discussion....and then we can all move forward...

honest comment- first impression of blackwith overt 'personality' is that it is different that mine...makes me feel uncomfortable...and I don't like it

I may come to peace with it and learn to like it and appreciate it as a cultural expression ext or I may continue to dislike it but either way IT IS OK so long as I don't actively hate and act upon this...we are talking about how people feel

Will you please link me to a study of dna responsible for racism to support your claim? Otherwise stop projecting your poo onto me just because you can't fathom that someone else isn't racist.

good post

I think many people are getting really burned out with race issues and although it is certainly a relevant topic of discussion that our society needs to have, sometimes its just people not liking other people...as you stated here

as a white male I can say this- sometimes I feel I am blamed for everything...

women think I am sexist and oppressive

blacks think I am racist and oppressive

Hispanics think I am racist and oppressive

gays and lesbians think I am homophobic and oppressive

not everyone of course...I have moments when I have great hope for humanity...but boy the victimization card is getting tired

and I'm even using it here lol!

Well if you:

Got paid less for the same job

Got longer prison sentences for the same crime

Get told you're unAmerican when you've been here longer than they have

Could get fired for who you are

Maybe you'd be blaming white males too.
