Former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs believes Panthers have a shot at 16-0

"They will have a chance for this reason: they are not winning it by skill plays or getting lucky on stuff," the Hall of Fame NFL coach and current Sprint Cup team owner said on Thursday during a NASCAR media event in Las Vegas.

"They are pounding people. Sometimes, when they don’t play as well, they beat you up. They have a good defense. Defense always leads you. They’ve got a quarterback making all kinds of plays. I think they are going to be hard to beat."

I grew up pulling for the Redskins and still like Joe Gibbs.  Kind of wish he would have been our first coach.

I've always had a deep respect for Gibbs, just can't stand his Nascar drivers.

Here and there you hear media types talking about the Panthers, and the ones that have watched all the games, they know, you can hear it in their voice. They know this is  just one of those teams that has it. Even over the Seattle team from 2 years ago. Maybe over the '09 Saints. Nah, that was a done deal... Oh yeah, they know this team is special and is winning Superbowl 50.

This was a fun read for me given that the only other football team I've ever been remotely this crazy about was the Redskins under Gibbs from 87 - 92.  Gibbs was such an awesome head coach and had my deep respect.  I appreciate his words about this year's Panthers.  It means a lot coming from him.  I appreciate too his honesty, not pretending that he's now a Panthers' fan, but still obviously deeply respecting them as an organization and a team.

Was this a possibility and if so how close were the Panthers to luring him out of retirement?

Im not actually sure, I do remember talk of Richardson trying to get him to coach the Panthers.  Im not even sure if Gibbs considered it at all.

Learn to separate things, bro. When a HOF coach says he believes a team is going undefeated, it has some merit worth appreciating.

certain people in sports, unique to us all, strike us in such a way that you just don't care for them or what they have to say.  (Tom Brady, Roger Godell, Bud Selig, Chris Burman) My use of "hate" is hyperbole and sports related at most.  Still doesn't change my opinion.

I also grew up a Redskins fan and I think Gibbs is one of the best coaches to ever sit on the sidelines.  Three Superbowl wins with 3 different qb's, none of who came close to being a HOF qb.  Him saying we have a shot means more than any regular analyst today.
