I get the feeling that Mike Shula might wind up being a better head coach than a lot of people think.

Worth remembering that coordinating and head coaching are different skill sets. That's a big reason why some fantastic coordinators fail as head coaches.

oh man that's insightful thanks so much for that

If either or both coordinators are let go, it's my opinion that Rivera would select their successors based on people he interviewed doing the things the team does well. By that I mean, if Shula leaves, he's not going to find someone with a completely different ideology for an offense. He'll find someone for the sake of continuity, and for that reason not much will change.

Just my opinion, but I think the team has shown for five years that they will choose continuity for Cam over making a splash hire.

As far as McDermott goes, I think it's Rivera's defense and McDermott does a great job of implementing it, and history has shown elite defenses have followed Ron Rivera wherever he has been throughout his entire career, be it as a player, coordinator, or head coach.

Either way it's nice to have coordinators on both sides of the ball that are thought of highly enough to even be having this debate.

First of all neither will be let go. They would be promoted and I don't think teams can stop a coordinator from taking a head coach job.

But to your point of continuity I agree. The problem is nobody on the offensive staff have ever been an OC in the NFL. As for defense it is true that Rivera is a defensive guru but as head coach he can't spend the time to be involved with the defense to be the coordinator. McDermott know this defense as well as Rivera and when you have all the high draft picks on defense we do you are going to be good. What Rivera has taught McDermott (which Johnson didn't) is to pick and choose your blitzes and give the offense different looks. Johnson blitzed too often and often paid the price giving up big plays.  Wilkes was with Rivera in San Diego and now here and would be the DC if Rivera left.

Honestly I feel like this is Ron Rivera's team now more than ever. Defensively, I think Ron could hire just about anyone and still field a top 10 unit. Offensively, Cam runs the offense so the man behind the schemes isn't as important as Cam's first couple years IMO.

It's like when New England lost Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weiss and the juggernaut just kept on moving.

I agree. Anyone who believes this is not Cam's offense is a buffoon. Yeah this isn't Cam's offense just like the Pats aren't Brady's offense or the Packers aren't Rodgers' offense. To think this isn't Cam's offense is insulting his football intelligence and I have no idea why anyone would think Cam can't be the leader of the offense. I also have no idea why anyone would think Rivera would hire someone to come in and drastically change everything if Shula left. It's real funny watching elitists post such trivial things to sound far superior when in reality they just look pathetic.

I think Wilkes is Asst. Head Coach so unless he gets hired as a HC by another team he can't leave

As long as they're under contract, the team can block any assistant from leaving for anything but a head coaching job.

Unfortunately, assistant coach contract details are hardly ever published, so there's no way to know whether or not Wilks is under contract beyond this year.
