He's Got One Quarter

That's it. That's what I think. Had a day to think about it, and Jake's got one quarter to prove himself against ATL. Start him. First bad pass that leads to a turnover or fumble where he had time to get rid of it, pull him. If he doesn't lead us to a score before his next turnover, pull him.

That would show me he's in a funk that he just can't get out of. We've got to slow the game down for him, run the ball, soften the defense up and get him out of the mindset that he's got to do it himself. B/c the only thing he has done himself is lose two games by himself. We were running the ball like beasts again that first drive, and once again just abandoned it to make Jake feel better about himself after his turned it over.

We've got to stick with the run if there is any hope of getting Jake out of this funk. But, like I said, he's got one quarter to prove himself again. Start him, see how he does. Stinks it up early, take him out and save the game, put Moore in.

In the meantime, we need to get another guy to bring in, even if it's under the guise that he would be filling McClown's spot, we need a guy to come in and be ready to take over along with Moore.

I doubt he will only play a quarter even if he sucks. Most likely if we do suck and he is a major contributor then we will pull him at the half or near the end of the third.

Unless he is completely incompetent and throws multiple picks on consecutive drives without TDs again.

If we do not bench Jake if he comes out stinking again, you have got to start thinking about the overall implications...

What kind of message does it send to a team when this play is accepted?

What kind of consistency is an offense supposed to achieve when the QB is pulled at halftime?

The answers to those two questions are big indicators of the direction this team is headed if they choose to stick it out with Jake...

Don't get me wrong... I hope with all the hope I have that Jake turns it around, but my gut is telling me he's done... Regardless of how PC he tries to keep it, you can tell that this is bothering Jake as much as it is us...

Now maybe some of you bitching at Pep will see where he (and a lot of others in the locker room) are coming from. Why would YOU want to play for a team that plays like this every week? What would the decisions that have been made at the top of the hierarchy make you think about the team's directions and, above all else, a chance at winning a championship?

Great post. Great points. I was saying to my friend yesterday, "Pep earned his money... Jake sat on his."

Now, I was pissed so I know it was a knee-jerk statement. But, I was worried that Pep was gonna half-step it this year, and he didn't. And when all those guys out there give it their all and one guy's decisions (maybe two depending on playcalling) throw the game out of reach, that's got to be demoralizing. It is for us as fans, so you know it's even more so for the players.

I'm with you. I know it's hurting Jake and he wants to turn it around. But, against my hopes, I just feel he is done. Things just haven't seemed right since the surgery. It's not really the arm strength, although yesterday that seemed pretty bad, b/c last year he really zipped some balls to Rosario and King that I remember.

It's gotta be his awareness and mechanics. But as I said, I think he's got a quarter of football to show he can play mistake free, and if he does, the team might start to feel like their efforts won't be wasted. If he messes up blatantly, like he did yesterday - he's gotta go, or the season is a wash.

I know alot of you guys are pissed at Jake. I am, too. But I have to ask myself, where was the blocking? From what I saw, there were Eagles in the backfield alot. I know Jake made some bad decisions but the front line looked pretty sorry also and contributed to some of those turnovers as well. If we're going to play the blame game, let's play fair.

I posted something similar in the Jake bashing thread...but he was quoted by Gantt basically saying he doesn't like to check down, its the Quarterbacks job and the OCs job to beat the blitz which can easily be done by throwing to the checkdown or hot read. The blame rests mostly on Jake and the Coaching staff. A lot less on the O-line.

Fox will stick with Jake until the bitter end.

He and Hurney gave Jake a huge contract. They have never really searched for competition for him even when he started to decline prior to Tommy John surgery. When you hitch your wagon to a rather hyper, sometimes erratic qb, you are all in. You go where he takes you.

Bench a healthy Jake for the season and Hur/Fox will have to face JR admitting they screwed the pooch on that contract and ask for more money to go get a replacement. The only hope for the current administration to keep their jobs is for Jake to bounce back and the team to somehow find a way to finish at least 9-7.

I can't put a lot of that on the OL. Our OL wasn't built to be a premiere pass blocking unit, they were built to road grate... They were out of their element.

Now, that being said, I WILL put it 60/40 on Jake and the coaching staff (Jake being 60). Because the coaching staff's calls were putting our offensive unit in a position to fail. As I mentioned in the other threads, I don't understand why they didn't put him in shotgun. That way he has more room/time to operate. And as Kral pointed out in the other thread as well, it has a tendency to spread the defense for runs as well.

I don't know why the coaching staff continued to put him under center after he already appeared panicked, when the Eagles were continuously loading up the LOS with more than we could block and therefore guys were in the backfield before it was even snapped.

I also think the simplicity of our passing game/routes hurt us. I can't really say how much of it had to do with Jake not checking down or him just not having sophisticated and efficient routes to check down to. Then again, Jake himself mentioned if he didn't have any confidence, he would've checked down every time... Suggesting he didn't check down at all.

That's where it becomes Jake's problem. It was up to him to protect the ball regardless of the formations he was being lined up in or the plays that were begin called. At that point, he's got to check down. He was fighting against himself. Throwing an INT on a HB Screen is inexcusable.

Like I mentioned in the other thread also, if you get a chance, watch how Pennington handled ATL's pressure in their game. One time he snapped it and immediately threw it down at Ronnie Brown's feet. He was clearly pissed. Brown looked at him like, "Sorry man..." And the announcer, Dierdorf I think, said "it looks like Pennington just threw it down at the feet of Brown b/c the someone was not where they were supposed to be at all."

See the difference. Pennington has control of that offense. He killed that down within a second of snapping it b/c the play wasn't there and to make a statement that "you guys are f*cking up, get your sh*t together."

Jake was the one f*cking up, and he clearly wasn't getting his stuff together. So the rest of the team was looking at him as the problem. He was. It was all decision making. Jake has the option to check down and call audibles, so it was ultimately up to him regardless.

    • Yes, and it sucks for us that his realization were true unfortunately. Little nice guy is probably exactly who you would want your daughter dating but not who you would want quarterbacking your NFL franchise.
    • Love Chuba,  but his agent definitely forced this move before we see Brooks play
