I get tired of the small market narritave. Charlotte is one of the fastest growing and top-15 in population last time I checked. Ahead of cities like Seattle, Cincinnati, Clevland, Pittsburgh and many others. Metropolitan is a little different. However the state of NC is growing rapidly as well and is one of the fastest growing states in the country. Take into account population areas of the Triangle and Triad and you have a solid market of population. Charlotte is mid market. No longer is it a small market city.

I don't feel embarrassed at all. Even some guys on the team let the national media comments fuel them. Josh and TD was on Sunday Countdown making people eat crow. I love J.No 24

Charlotte's growing rapidly but if you measure by metro area it's a bottom 10 NFL city in population.  Like Pittsburgh has 400k less people within the city limits but its full metro area has a million plus more than Charlotte's.

The Panther's TV market is the sixth largest despite this though so I'd agree with you.

The Panthers historically have been an average team.  We have yet to put back to back seasons together.  Sure we made the playoffs two years in a row, but with a losing record.  The Patriots get the respect they deserve for being the best team over the past 15 years.

I agree with this to an extent, but then why did so many pick Atlanta to win the NFC South?  They have hardly been a model of consistently.  So I will add something to your reason.  The Media likes teams that have either proven themselves (as you said), or have/sign big name players on offense.  If we had a guy like Julio Jones, or had we signed someone like Cobb in the off season, the media would have at least picked us to win the division saying something along the lines of "they got Cam some help".   Back when both us and Atlanta were undefeated, it seemed the analyst all said that Atlanta was better because of Julio Jones.  IMO, our passing game is much better than Atlanta, even with Jones, but that is not easy to quantify for media types because we don't have a big name receiver for them to glorify. 

 

Those type of signings are sexy and draw attention, even if they don't make the impact that many analyst seem to believe they do.  Signing Oher and Tillman are better signings imo due to salary cap restrictions, but they won't draw raves from the media like the signing of a big name receiver would.  In truth, this is something our own fan base had issues with, especially after KB went down.    But they were relatively cheap and allowed us to get help in other areas while not killing our cap numbers down the road.

I think according to current estimates, the Charlotte Metro area is ahead of Pittsburgh now.  Charlotte is 22nd or 23rd, while Pittsburgh is right behind Charlotte.

Of course, both teams draw fans from outside the Metro area.  I know plenty of Panther fans in the Winston/Greensboro/High Point area that head to Charlotte at least once or twice a year for a game (myself included).
