i don't understand. Stewart is 3rd in the league in rush yards. how is our run game not effective without Cam's yards

This is not an old school grind it out running game the Panthers have. They do not depend on the RBs to keep the drives going with first downs. They depend on the RBs to challenge a defense and keep them honest to open up the run options and play fakes. This is what opens up the intermediate zones in the passing game.

Yes, Stewart is productive. No, Stewart does not carry the offense. No, Stewart does not keep the chains moving with first downs. He helps to set it all up. The Panthers are not relying on the running game to carry the offense to victory. If they were the Panthers would be score 10 to 17 points a game.

I understand your concept. None of it would be possible without Stewart being productive and opposing defenses respecting that production.

I understand the posts saying we aren't the greatest run team but if being the only team that runs more than it throws isn't run first than nothing is. It takes a lot of attempts to get our yards but we are committed to it.

The Panthers have been in 3rd/4th and short 36 times this season. They have passed the ball 16 times. Cam has run with the ball 14 times (8 were called run plays). RBs carry the ball 6 times (17%).

As for the Panthers first downs, they have passed for 60% of them. The RBs only account for 22% of all first downs.

This is what I mean by not like the past teams.  We got down to the Dallas goal line and passed it 3x. Back when Fox was here, we would have run it 3 times..maybe play action on the last one, but you can bet the goal was going to be to push it into the endzone.

I think we are a better offense now, but we don't do the run on 1rst, run on 2nd, pass on 3rd of the John Fox era.  To me, that's what I consider a run first team.  We are much more balanced.

The playoff run to the 2003 Superbowl, the Panthers were the most balance offense in the league.

Fox loves the run. Most defensive minded head coach do. The run is one of the most difficult plays to defend.

It also makes it easier to pass, as opposing defenses are going.to commit to stopping our run, in hopes of making us one demensional, and easier to defend.

We are still a run dominant team. Situational play calling doesn't change rhat.

...aside from our kick ass defense we are unique on on offence. Cam is carrying this team with his legs and his decision with the ball...Morrall was a game manager with a hell of a running game..oh yea and mercury morris and paul warfield...i dont see the similarity...

The run game's a bit overrated IMO. And not just for their pedestrian yards per rush.

This comes from national reporters who don't watch the team.

Most of the Panthers rush attempts come when they already have the lead, and are basically just running the clock out. That's why they may have more rushing than passing attempts (not sure what the number is now). .

The Panther passing game has a much bigger effect than people realize. We see this all the time. Cam, has 150-200 passing yds by the half, but ends the game with only 50-60 more yards. That's because the Panthers usually have a sizeable lead by/after the half, then they're running more.

It's a balanced attack. But it's never usually the running game that mostly marches up the field and scores TD's early in games. It's the passing attack or at worst a balance that jumps out to the early lead or scoring.

As Cookie Lyon would say, "they say this (it's a running team/non passing team) to slight Cam".

Thanks for the shout out!!!

And for those of you talking about Stewart being 3rd in the NFL in rushing. You do realize he has a game over most of the other RBs. They still play on Sunday and Monday. He could easily be out of the top 10 come Tuesday.

All that matters on offense is first downs and touchdowns per drive. Everything else is just tactical moves to keep the defense on their toes.

When your QB is your main weapon on the ground to keep the chains moving and scoring TDs, you are not a ground and pound grind it out running team. The only teams in the NFL that are ground and pound teams are the Seahawks, Vikings, Bills, Bucs, and Rams - although the Rams are just plain bad on offense.

Stewarts the perfect RB for this offense, while he isn't the guy who'll reel off massive runs (that often), you very rarely see him stuffed at the line of scrimmage, a 1/2 yard run for a lot of RBs he manages to turn into 4 or 5, doesnt sound much but that can make all the difference in an offensive drive

The old adage about football is that "football is a game of inches."

Our Panthers are the epitome of this truth. 3rd and 4, while eating up minutes off the clock is what this team is all about.

Yeah, we have a bunch of "no-name" receivers on our team, but they are quite complimentary possession receivers that are great at keeping the chains moving.

also, no one really talks much about our reverse handoffs to Ginn that even though we run it once a game or every couple of games, it almost always moves the chains.

Our receivers have really blossomed as run blockers as well and I don't think they get enough credit for blocking.
