Man, Ron and Marty went to this dude's house with his family and said they might draft him. I remember he was basically crying when we didn't take him in the green room. He belongs here, we can motivate him. I'm sure he'd give his all for this opportunity.

i agree with this 100%. pull the trigger Gman!

What are the waivers?  Someone educate me

When a player is released midseason, The teams can option to take on his current contract.  Teams are lined up in reverse order of current NFL standings, so that if more than one team claims him, he will go to the team with the higher waiver order.

If he clears waivers, his contract is nullified and he becomes a FA, free to sign a new contract.

According to Rotoworld:

If a team nabs Coples off waivers, they would be on the hook for his $7.751 million fifth-year option for next season, but the option is guaranteed for injury only.

So the concern isn't his current salary, it's the automatic pickup of his 5th year injury guarantee. Not sure it's worth running the risk of a 7 mil cap hit in the event of injury...

Here's something else on his current contract from ESPN:

Quote

Coples signed a fully guaranteed four-year, $8.8 million contract. This past spring, the Jets exercised their fifth-year option for $7.8 million in 2016 -- guaranteed at the time for injury only. The Jets no longer owe him that money, and it's wiped off their salary cap.
