When a player is released midseason, The teams can option to take on his current contract.  Teams are lined up in reverse order of current NFL standings, so that if more than one team claims him, he will go to the team with the higher waiver order.

If he clears waivers, his contract is nullified and he becomes a FA, free to sign a new contract.

We have an open roster spot so I would bet we put in a claim for Coples otherwise we would've filled that spot by now. Doubt no other team gets him before us but would be really nice to add him.

So the concern isn't his current salary, it's the automatic pickup of his 5th year injury guarantee. Not sure it's worth running the risk of a 7 mil cap hit in the event of injury... 

Here's something else on his current contract from ESPN:
