Jets waive Quentin Coples

Wow. Interesting to note that the Jets now run a base 4-3 (although these terms are really starting to become obsolete because many teams are now employing base nickel packages) and they still didn't give Coples playing time this year. This may be a buy low situation where Gettleman sees a vet that never fit into his previous team's scheme and brings him in. He'll see whether or not he has anything to offer. If he doesn't he'll probably just stagnate in FA, or the Bills will pick him up.

Interesting about the Jets playing 4-3 now. Hadn't heard that, but I don't follow them as closely and thought they started the year as a 3-4. Could be a red flag to watch, especially if he's not buying into what HC Bowles is selling. Wonder if the current Jets GM drafted Coples

We currently have 6 DEs and 4 DTs on the roster.  This is already one DE too many for what we normally keep.

Charles Johnson, Kony Ealy, Jared Allen, Mario Addison, Wes Horton, and Ryan Delaire.

We will likely cut a DE to officially make room for CJ.  Probably Horton.  So, who do we cut for Coples?  We need our depth at other positions for STs. Unless the 290 pounder can play kick coverage, I don't know if he is worth cutting Addison or Delaire.

It's been a more recent transition and who knows if they'll stick with it for good. They've actually been through two GMs since he was drafted and the guy that did draft him got fired just one year later. My take on the Jets is that they're a turbulent franchise with literally no direction or continuity, and it stifles the development of players. Only day one starters really thrive on that team. They're constantly chasing the Patriots' success and they probably will never find any consistency until Belichick and Brady call it quits.

It's no surprise to me that they bungled the potential of Quinton Coples, who I think is talented enough to contribute if we picked him up. There's a right price for every player. I definitely don't want him at the cost it would take to pick him up off waivers, but as an undefeated team with a thriving system, this is probably the best environment for him to have a second chance at proving himself. We have that leverage now. Wouldn't surprise me if we took him on with a really cap friendly hit.

That's another thing. I'd like the idea of bringing him in even more if it was the off-season. We're in the middle of this group's first real championship run. Is the risk of him not adjusting to our scheme fast enough, if at all, less than the chance he puts the defense at the 2000 Ravens or 1985 Bears level? Does the new guy cost us a critical mental mistake in the playoffs that a guy who's been on our team all year wouldn't have made?

I trust the Gettlefather to make the best decision.

When is the deadline for waivers?

Not sure what you mean, but teams have 24 hours to claim a player. After time is up, the team highest on the waiver list gets the player if more than one team put in a claim.

If he wanted to come back home, he could refuse to sign with anyone else right?

Not sure if anyone else commented on this, wasn't gonna click on 4 more pages of "let's give him a look" or "he won't clear waivers" heh.  Even if he refused to sign with the team that claimed him, they'd still own his rights and he wouldn't be allowed to sign with anyone else.  Sure, he could hope they just give up, then he'd go back on the waiver wire and the next team down that claimed him would have to go through the same shennanigans.  Basically there's a small fraction of a chance he becomes a Panther, unless other teams know something we don't and avoid him.
