Jets waive Quentin Coples

Back on subject, I doubt we'd have any interest.  We have really good depth at DE now with CJ returning.  We're already gonna have to let one walk, probably Horton.  The only way I could see bringing in Coples is if Gettleman doesn't want both of his reserve DEs to be pass rushing specialists (Addison and Delaire) and sees Coples as an upgrade over Horton.  I guess it's possible as Gettleman loves his pass rushers.  In reality, he probably won't clear waivers.  Some 4-3 team needy at DE will scoop him up and try him out for the rest of the season.

Mmmm very interesting. He may get no looks because of that.

but after he clears the waivers we're free to sign him to whatever we want, correct?

Correct. If no team puts a claim on him, then he clears waivers, and his contract disappears. He's a free agent who can sign with any team his little heart desires.

In the past, he wouldn't clear waivers because more teams had actual football guys running the show. But nowadays, more and more front offices are run by number guys who'll see that $7 million guaranteed next year and say "Too rich for our blood. We'll pass". With Gettleman, he might roll the dice on a hog mollie. We'll see.

I'd love to bring him home but he'll never clear waivers, and I'd take him at this year's cap bit but not next year's. And those of you saying they'd cut Addison for him are smoking crack

Looking back, the top 10 of that draft was a train wreck.  Hell, most of the 1st round was honestly.  Very happy to have pulled Kuechly out of that mess.

UNC fans always drastically overrate their players on here.

I'm no UNC fan, I cheer for Duke in Basketball and I have no College football team. However, people said the same things about Jared Allen.. That he was done, and he isn't as good as people thought. Well that's what happens when you take a guy who was playing in a 3-4, and convert him back to that 4-3 defense he's used to. Coples is a 4-3 DE/DT period.

Isn't ATL running a 3-4 defense? They wouldn't pick him up. At this point, all we can do is hope for the best. Coples would be amazing in this line. Especially if he can play DT. Swapping him on the inside with KK. Wreaking havoc. I hope he clears waivers and comes to Carolina. That would solve several positions. I still think he'd be better than Addison and Horton. You can bet your ass he'd sign with us if he clears waivers.

Wow. Interesting to note that the Jets now run a base 4-3 (although these terms are really starting to become obsolete because many teams are now employing base nickel packages) and they still didn't give Coples playing time this year. This may be a buy low situation where Gettleman sees a vet that never fit into his previous team's scheme and brings him in. He'll see whether or not he has anything to offer. If he doesn't he'll probably just stagnate in FA, or the Bills will pick him up.

He would be a Huge pickup.  The guy has massive upside and many had him with one of the most potential in that draft.  He can play outside at 4-3 DE but is pretty raw (which where else would be a better fit than putting him under CJ and Allens wing).  He was solid coming out of UNC.  He really only had 1 Good standout year, but not many other players would standout being shadowed by Robert Quinn.  His final year, he was solid at DE but pretty raw.  The big thing about him is he did real well at UNC was move inside at DT in those NASCAR type packages, like we did with Hardy.

So Coples would help at DT and DE.  Could be a steal for us, as a #4 DE and NASCAR DT.

I'm not even against getting Coples. But I wouldn't even release a guy like Mario Addison for him which some people have suggested.

I would not either, I would like for it to be a guy like Horton. Who IMO is nowhere near as good as the other guys on our roster he's playing on that DL with.

Delaire would go before Addison.  Both are pure pass rush specialists, but Addison is the more proven one.  Like I was saying, the only way I see Coples added is if Gettleman and Rivera don't want both of their backup DEs being pass rush specialists and they see Coples as being an upgrade over Horton.

The one advantage Coples may have is that he may have the ability to play both DE and rush DT in our defense.
