Is it just me or is the math wrong on this?

For the past two weeks, this has been popping up sporadically on my news feed on Facebook:

....are participating in a book exchange. I need 6 moms, moms to be, grandmas, or anyone interested in the book exchange that will actually participate and follow through.

Here is how we play! You must purchase and mail ONE book to a child and then your child receives 36 books in return (if all goes well and everyone follows through).
You can do this in less than 10 minutes if you order the book through Amazon. Just think of how much fun checking the mail will be for your child with lots of books coming!

Let me know if you are interested, and I'll message you the instructions...it's super simple!

my guess is this is a viral copy/paste social thing but it's not technically accurate and nobody is really pointing it out. If there's 6 parents, and 6 children, and each parent is buying one book for each of the other children, then each child receives 5 books, and each parent will be buying 5 books. Right?

Upon further review, this is a pyramid scheme.

http://www.thatsnonsense.com/the-36-books-for-1-book-exchange-pyramid-scheme-debunked/

It

1. requires an incomprehensible level of trust and perfect execution

2. Sounds very optimistic and only highlights the potential of the program and doesn't mention any likely setbacks.

3. Contains limited information as to draw you in and lures naive people in to at least make the commitment to contact.

It's basically primerica for the kids.

Yeah, like any pyramid or ponzi scheme, the further you get, the more people you have to feed into the system to keep it running.  Eventually you run out of willing participants and the majority of the participants end up losing out.

    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
    • Except it wouldn't be Rodgers leading them on a postseason run, it would be the defense and he's there to not screw up their great games. Which is why..... This times a million. I didn't watch a ton of the Jets last year, but from what I did see, Rodgers himself didn't look like a bum, the team just struggled and was more than likely due to poor coaching on the whole.  The Steelers don't need MVP level Rodgers to win games, they just need him to be good enough to make some plays when it matters because the defense is keeping them in games every week regardless. In their 7 losses last season, the Steelers scored 10, 13, 17, 17, 17, 19, and 24... while giving up 19, 20, 24, 27, 27, 29, and 34 in those games.  With only marginally better offense last year, they probably end up winning a few more games too. They only scored over 27 points in 3 games last season. I think this is a great move by the Steelers and if Rodgers can stay healthy all year, will get them back into the playoffs and could make some noise if their defense is up to the normal level of a Steelers defense.
