Carolina Panthers #4 Scoring Offense

I would say that one thing the defense is dong best is forcing turnovers and limiting points on our give aways.  That's probably what's making the difference in our point totals.

We have forced 18 take aways (4th best in the league) and scored 61 points.  We've given up 12 giveaways (right around the middle of the league - tied with other teams), but have ONLY ALLOWED 15 points on those 12 giveaways.  THIS is where the defense is excelling, and the offense is doing a pretty good job of turning take aways into points.

We LEAD THE LEAGUE in Net Turnover Points with 46.

And we're getting better. I really feel like our defense is starting to take it personally that we're letting teams back into games.

I'm really interested in our 4th quarter stats. Would love to see what you came up with... why are we letting teams back into games late. Is it conservative play calling? Is it stalled drives? Or is our defense gassed and unable to apply pressure.

Pretty unbelievable.  I wouldn't have thought we could've done it with KB, but without him?  Not a chance in hell.

Pretty crazy that the last two games we've built big leads and then our "great defense" has barely been able to hang on.  I think getting CJ and Dwan back will be HUGE for our D.  Our lack of DL depth right now is a big problem in the 4th quarter.  Bene needs to jerk his head out of his ass too.  He's a liability out there.  Not sure we wouldn't be better off putting Jones back out there as a buffalo nickel.

I'll see what I can come up with to understand our recent 4th qtr weakness.  It seems to be a mix of offensive (poor & short drives) and defensive factors (giving up some big plays), but I don't have a clear handle on it, and I'm not going to be the best person to analyze the play calling aspect of it... (i.e. did we get too conservative).

I think it is weird.

On offense, late in games....teams are dictating our offense IMO.  They are forcing us to pass our way to close out games.  So I don't think we are too conservative on offense.  I think we let teams dictate our play too much.

Defense is the one I got no clue about.

I've put together a series of table to compare our takeaways & giveaways from 2013 - 2015.  You can see we're forcing more take aways per game, and scoring a marginally higher number of points per takeaway.

We're giving away the ball at a marginally higher level in 2015, but we've dramatically reduced the number of points we're allowing our opponents to score compared with 2014.  The result is we're netting an average of nearly 6 points per game due to points scored off of turnovers.

I think our defense has the ability to do anything at any given moment but are not consistent enough to be great. Considering 20th in yards per game and 11 in pts per game on defense I almost think it could be argued that the offense is ahead of the defense or at least you might say it's a balanced team right now.

Actually, if you look at defensive production per drive, you will see why they give up the yards. Panthers rank 4th among defenses in points per drive. They are #1 in time allowed for a drive with 2m17s.

The Panthers offense is 4th worst in the NFL for sustaining a drive with 2m21s. They are among the top 10 in converting drives into points.

So, the Panthers defense is facing more pressure than any other defense in the NFL with 14 drives and 75 plays a game, and they continue to get teams off the field and keep them from scoring. This allows the Panthers offense more drives to score points.

The defense is carrying this team. Cam Newton is willing this offense to put points up on the board, but having trouble sustaining drives. There are only 4 teams converting scores per drive  at a better rate than the Panthers (Pats, Cards, Giants, and Bengals).

This is the first year I've seen Cam walk up to the line, call audibles, call protections, call routes, audible again, etc. He has really zoned into the chess game that is being a QB, rather than just repeat the playcall that the OC sends down. That is why Cam is now in the MVP discussion. His awakening this year to the mental part of the game has changed the entirety of the Panthers offense.

Exactly. A big reason why Rivera and Gettleman didn't  want to change offenses or coordinators over the past couple of seasons. This is what continuity gives a quarterback when they play in the same system. They learn the intricacies of the system and master it.  Cam is making good reads and decisions for the most part and his long ball accuracy has really picked up as the O line gives him time

Great analysis.  Thanks
