I believe there's designated places to stop and put on tire chains before heading up the mountain.

But you can put them on and take them off in a safe place. Driving with chains on clean pavement is just as bad as driving on ice. Cables aren't as heavy, you can get some that automatically adjust. I drive a Miata in the snow with cables. Oh and make sure to turn off traction control
