Pass Rush vs Packers

Being more efficient on offense as well will help.  First I was hoping the weather is better.  Then thinking about it, I hope it's another monsoon.  We didn't have as many long drives especially in the fourth quarter to get the defense a rest.  The bogus calls stopping our drives in the fourth quarter hurt big time.

Our pass rush/coverage was fine for 3 quarters.  However Aaron Rodgers isn't going to miss those wide open receivers like Luck.  Going to be tough and we are going to need an A game from either offense or defense.  Shaq being back will help (if he is healthy).

I think the reason we don't blitz much is because we are a cover 2 zone type defense. We rely on our LBs to play coverage down the seam and in the flats. If we send a LB on a blitz, that opens up those zones and with a QB like Rodgers, that could make for a long day.

Our most common blitz is when we blitz TD and drop the DE from the other side into coverage to overload one side. So even when we do blitz we are still usually only sending 4 and dropping 7 into coverage.

A big factor will be whether we mostly play zone or man.  Denver played mostly man last Sunday and the corners stuck to their men for at least 4 or 5 seconds because one of Rodger's best abilities is to keep the play alive and look for guys late in the play or when the secondary breaks down.  The defense got to Rodgers because of the coverage in the secondary.

If we sit back in zone and rush 4 we are in big trouble as Rodgers nickels and dimes us down the field all day.  If we come out in man on the three wideouts and tight ends and let the linebackers clean up the run game we might be okay. That was the adjustment we made against New Orleans in the second half and should do all game this week. They are going to expect mostly zone so we need to switch it up and play mostly man. Green Bay's game is predicated on winning the one on one matchups and their wideouts are not that great this year.  It will come down to our secondary against their wideouts and playing man instead of zone.  I hope we can get it done.

I was conflicted in our last game.

Was our d-line "gassed" or were we missing guys like Shaq, Charles Johnson, and Mario Addiison?

or a little bit of both?

It's definitely a little of both, because they go hand-in-hand.  We have less guys to rotate, meaning they are on the field longer.  As it gets later in the game, they get tired.  You could tell our d-line was gassed in the 4th quarter Monday night.  Also add in the fact that the guys who are out, are pivotal to our situational game plan.  If they're out, we can't do everything we want/need to do.

I wonder if Addison and/or Edwards stays out for the Packers, might we call up Cox or Alecxih from the PS?   Hard to think who we'd waive in order to do that, however.   Maybe Simonson?

Here are the snap counts of our D Line from the Colts game:

def snaps  %   ST snaps  ST%

Jared Allen DE      65    76%    1
Kawann Short  DT 64 74%    7   17%
Kony Ealy DE 60 70%    7 17%
Star Lotulelei DT 59 69%    7 17%
Ryan Delaire DE 41 48%
Kyle Love DT 29 34%
Wes Horton DE 25 29%    6

17%

Can honestly say I'm not impressed with Hortons pass rush.

I find it hard to believe that  McDermott is not (as we speak) in a underground laboratory far below BoA concocting exotic blitz schemes and elaborate cover packages for Sunday. That given ,rotation is key. Monday night was do or die for the Colts. they were playing for not only their season but possibly Pagano's job. I'm not saying Green Bay won't be hard.( I'm sure they'll want to take out that loss at Denver on us.) I just don't know if the level of emotion will match that of the Colts.
