Can anyone explain the 4th quarter collapse of our D ?

Rivera also said in presser that the line's feet kept slipping on the wet grass which means the players don't get pressure and get tired sooner.

Rivera says late yardage by Colts was the result of inconsistent pass rush. A lot of guys slipping when going after Luck.

We got conservative too soon on both offense and defense against a team that had four downs to play with the entire fourth quarter and didn't even need to actually catch passes.  The NFL wanted their narrative and they got it.

I am watching the game on NFLN right now. We really didn't. I saw 4 plays in the TD drive to get it to 23-13 where we rushed 5. Only once did a corner back away from press and that was Norman at around the 20. Much of the drive was check downs to Gore and a middle of the field play on a Luke blitz. Watch it again.

Its called loosening up the defense in order to prevent the other team from scoring quickly (i.e. big plays).

Except for the fact that they DID score quickly because they were moving the ball in 20 yard chunks.

And this same story has cost us before and almost cost us again last night.

Again almost counts in grenades and atom bombs but not football scores. When it does then come back and bitch. Until then the past has little bearing on the future when each game is individual matchups against specific teams not trends.

The rain stopping was a huge thing. Plus the D was gassed and of course, no team wants to give up the deep ball so I feel like we gave them some underneath room.

A couple of the chain moving plays on the TD drives came on Luke blitzes into the space he vacated. That's not being conservative.

Pass protecting ie. Holding on every down.

The refs in that last qt. let the Colts get away with murder. That's why our D looked like poo.

This!  I know I'm a home'r, but this was blatant on almost every down.  Some of those holds were two feet from Luck.

I really don't think our defense fell apart or was the problem.

Like many have said already it was inevitable that they would give up a score or two. The D did plenty well enough for us to win the game. Our offense failed to close it out. You gotta help your team out late in the 4th quarter and move the chains. In particular a few times I can think of would be the extra point, late in the 4th we should converted on the third down before the 2 minute warning to potentially have sealed the game, and in OT Gin should have closed it out with a catch.

Our inconsistent offense is our biggest weakness and it showed last night. Not worried about the defense at all, much more worried when we have the ball!

IMO, there's 2 reasons that add up to this.

First, the panthers defense got gassed by LIVING on the field in the 4th quarter.  For all the people who think McDermott isn't one of the best D-Coords in the game, I REALLY disagree.  When the defense is given time on the sideline, we often make brilliant in game adjustments to stop what the other team is doing, but when you are only on the sideline for 3 plays, you get your gatorade and get back out there.  If our offense gave them even the slightest break, IMO, the 4th quarter collapse doesn't happen.  Coincidentally, notice how the last colts drive (in overtime) we made adjustments and stopped them.

Secondly, the panthers defense is at it's best when Luke is able to dissect the play, and get guys in the right position, but when the other team is in the no huddle/hurry up offense, it kind of neutralizes one of our greatest assets.  I'm not worried about our defense, they'll be better than fine, they're one of the best in the NFL, and next week, we're gonna go out and prove it all over again.

Only one I saw playing off was Norman and only a couple of times. He got beat on comeback routes. Got to respect Hilton deep in that situation.

I agree, and I remember him early in the season trying to jump routes in one specific game and I don't know that they ever capitalized on it but he def got burnt a couple times because of it. Plus, Luck was taking shots deep on him and Tillman so he definitely did the right thing last night.
