Umm do you know what prevent defense is? We're technically playing soft zone. The panthers were clearly playing to not give up the deep pass and let the underneath passes go when we went up 23-6. Maybe you should learn football.

Yeah not just the pass rush but Bene's and Peanut's legs failing and Josh said in the postgame that he wasn't sure he would last another drive if Gano missed the FG. Entire D was just gassed since our offense had those 3 and outs in the 4th. Actually only one going completely strong the entire 4th quarter and regulation was Luke. Complete monster. Pretty sure TD missed a fair amount of plays towards the end. Got so bad we had Ben Jacobs in there. Having Kalil and Norwell back should prevent us from having our D on the field that much late in a game. Refs didn't help us either. Not too thrilled about being on a short week after a long game like this one.

Right under the 9 minute mark in the 4th quarter with the Panthers up by 3 scores the coaches took over and played to run the clock out with defense and offense.

Defense... give them the underneath with zone and keep them in bounds.

Offense... run run and run. Stay in bounds. Hopefully we get a first down.

You could see cuts to Cam and Norman obviously annoyed with the play calling. Every time the coaches take control and reel the team in, the Panthers are put in a bind.

Cam did not want to run some of those plays, but was not allowed to change the plays in conservative mode. Norman hated giving TY Hilton 10 yards and giving up catches. Cam wanted to take shots to put the game away. Norman wanted to by in TY's face all game and shut him out.

I love it when you see Cam wave off the play calls with the game on the line. He knows it is bad. Thankfully they trust him now.

Also, Kuechly showed some frustration with the play calls too as he would furiously motion to get the play call in faster.

When your key players are showing the coaches are not definitive among themselves with the game on the line, you can tell what part of the team is holding the Panthers back from being the most dominant team in the NFL.

I say if the coaches do not have the play in within 10 seconds, then Kuechly and Cam get to call the play on the field. You have all week to game plan. You should know what you are going to do on the next play before the current play is over. Championship teams I have been on had systems that determined the plays available based on how the previous drives have finished. The best coaches know what they are going to do before the next drive and stick to it.

This is what pains me in the playoffs. I know the Panthers have the core players to beat anyone, and bury them while getting the victory. I also know the coaches (while getting better each year) are still like the poker rookies who keep peeking at their cards and giving tells while the pros sit across the table reading your every move, taking one look at the cards dealt, and knowing what they will do as soon as they see the flop. Belichick, McCarthy, and Carroll are the pros. Rivera, McDermott, and Shula are the rookies.

The coaching match-ups like next week against the Packers are what worry me the most. The Panthers play better when Kuechly and Cam can make their own calls. That should tell you everything.

Yeah so I don't understand why people said we were playing in a prevent defense. We weren't.

We had personnel issues. We had ref issues, and pass rush issues. It's hard for me to over analyze the coaching performance when we clearly had them stopped on 4th and 10th and the replay team blows a call. I mean they say they are communicating with NY. I'm sure Dean Blandino is lobbying to keep the game going for ratings.

Once again Ealy took most of the game off and Star has also been pretty disappointing this season as well. The linebackers and the secondary had to work their asses off in this game. 

 

Star is performing badly in both the run and pass games. I don't know what's up with him but he needs to pick it up.

Hell, so did the defense for that matter.  It took a blatant offensive pass interference handing them a TD and a clear incomplete pass called a catch on 4th down and then upheld under review to drag that game into OT.

I missed have missed the flag (watching the game in Costa Rica). Regardless though, Shulaball happens in every game. If we have a lead, it starts around minute 6.  Play calling become conservative as hell. Which is why our games become train wrecks that give heart attacks week in and week out. I think Shula has done a good job for 54 minutes in our games this year and I've eased off my vitriol toward him but man do I hate the way he plays the last 6 when we have even the smallest of leads.

Everybody can clearly see we went into a soft zone once we went up 23-6. Soft zone is a form of prevent defense. Which is to not allow the deep ball, the big play and give them the underneath routes. The soft zone has nothing to do with the pass rush, the coverage in the secondary played off. Just stop and go rewatch the game.
