ESPN D Stats (Total D)

Friend thinks when he clicks on Total Defense under stats it brings him to a page that formulates all the stats together and ranks them on such. 

Would someone kindly explain that page and those stats and rankings. Just doesnt seem to get it.

by default it just ranks based on total yards allowed...you can sort however you want.

we're ranked #7 in yards allowed and tied with Seattle at #5 for pts allowed per game.

edit: actually #9 in yards allowed per game (bye week)

They don't really do team or unit rankings. It is pretty much all individual. They do do some but it is mostly based off the individual grades. Football outsiders does it.

ranking with all the individuals combined would be a total d stat no?

You could add them up yourself I guess but grades are only relevant in comparison to players of the same position.

wow, thought for sure last year PFF ranked teams on O and D

anyways can some other posters explain total D stats from espn to my friend. he needs more than one to get him to admit he is wrong lol

If Football Outsiders does it, we are ranked in the teens.

all it takes is a pair of eyes (or hell, one eye) to see that the list is in order of least yards allowed.  shouldn't be that hard to understand lol

All those stats are wrong. Everyone knows the Panthers D is #1.
