Is it building through the draft?

If any of these are no... then it aint happening.

Fans generally like the idea of trading big money / high picks for short term help.

Gettleman? Not so much.

He looks to be right. History is on his side. Trading or signing multiple free agents to huge contracts doesn't mean playoffs/superbowls.  Winning on paper doesn't translate to wins. Just ask the cowboys/redskins.

The only trade we'd make for an LT is for some 3rd stringer nobody has heard of for a conditional pick.

I don't think it needs to happen either.

Btw, money is not the issue here. His yearly salary is very good for the best LT in the game. The issue here is that our line is actually really good right now while WR is the most in need of help. I wouldn't mind trading for Thomas, but I'd prefer trading for a WR like Boldin.

Thomas wouldn't be "short term help".  Jared Allen is short term help.  Thomas has at least 4 more years in him.

I don't think Gettleman will, but whether he should is a toss up, in my opinion.

Some people just like saying the same ol cliches without looking at the actual facts. I have no dog in this fight, but the money and number of years is a non-issue.

CJ's contract will obviously have to be tinkered with.  No way he's worth his cap hit.  If Allen plays well the rest of the year, he can be extended out a couple years probably to lower his cap hit.  If not, then cut him.  We have some young DEs that at least have potential to be solid starters (Alexander, Ealy, Delaire).  We can certainly survive without at least one of our two older DEs, if not both.  I don't think either at this stage are proportionately better than the three aforementioned guys than the difference in salary.  Plus there's always the draft.  Easier to find a DE these days than an OT.  JStew's contract could also be worked on, probably (in some way or another).

The thing is, Alexander ruptured his Achilles and that's almost always a career death knell.  I'm curious as to why that is, considering all of the medical advancements in the last few years, but no one ever seems to come back all the way from it.
