Famine, Flood, and Lackluster Quarterbacking: A Deconstruction of Narrativity in Football

Do you really see this as the end of the Luck for Hall of Fame story?  I think the world will give him a mulligan for this season because he's Andrew Luck.

Love that you're using the history of Gaul =)  No one pays enough attention to the history of the middle ages!  And I love the point about it's what's NOT said that's almost as important (or more so) than what is said!

Again, great post!  I hope you are making money off these!

it's tempting to read hyperbole into these types of statements but i honestly believe it's happening. the narrative has been crumbling for a while now. espn shows have been running with topics like "have we criminally overrated luck?" and more and more articles are launching criticism of his playing at the basest level.

i think if the panthers drag him up and down the field in a multi-sack, multi-turnover performance on monday night football that the colts (and specifically andrew luck) will see a palpable fall from grace that's unprecedented in his career. i think people will finally openly admit he's not elite, or anywhere near it.

Nice work as usual.

It's hard to say with Luck really. He's only 26. I think that football team as a whole is a bit of a mess right now.

For me, I'm not going to be too hard on him because we have seen how things take a turn for the worse under these conditions with our own team before. It's for that reason that I am not going to be involved much in any piling on. I also am not at all completely writing off the Colts like some of our fans seem to be doing this week.

That caption with Luck sitting on the ground was priceless

I first learned about subjective bias in the NFL when people would talk about how good Delhomme was, that he was almost Brady level. People would literally say, "well if you take Delhomme's worst games out his passer rating is comparable to Peyton Manning." I was like really? Take Peyton Manning's worst games out and the gap reappears so what the hell kind of point is that?

Remember prior years when we were worried about Newton being ruined by poor line play and such?

You're watching it happen in Indy.

I've argued with a couple of people that David Carr actually could have been a quality NFL quarterback if the Texans hadn't screwed him up. I'd call this evidence that that'strue, and sad.

The graphic they put up on MNF a few weeks back about how many different linemen he's had was jaw dropping. Despite what some thought watching Indy draft multiple receivers, Ryan Grigson has done a horrible job building around his quarterback.

Could he be beyond repair? If they don't fix the team's issues, yeah he could be.

First step is firing Grigson.

My favorite college course of all time was Historiography.  For a full semester we studied nine different accounts of the War of the Roses.  Yes, I learned a hell of a lot about the period, but the best lesson was in one of subjectivity (and therefore objectivity).  Brilliant article that is perfectly timed.

And that background face of Luck on your charts had me rolling.  Pieing everything you post this week.

agree. grigson has built that offense backwards and its a losing strategy. the panthers DL may actually be the nastiest they've faced so far this year, so it should be a visual spectacular for fans monday night

    • I'm with you.  Even an extra 3rd would help.  None of the players you listed are elite though.  Sadly there are very few of those in this draft, but there are a lot of good players in the late first and into the second. We need to realize that we can't get all our needs in this year's draft.  We know we need some sort of edge, a safety, and I feel we need to use one of first 4 picks on a CB, preferably 3rd at latest.  And I want to draft an OT in 3rd to learn behind Moton this year. The extra 2nd would be huge.  2 things Bear Hands has noted in other threads, we can get a rusher in the mid rounds of the first, and if a good LT is available at our pick we should be able to get a deal. I'm ok.  If the media takes are close, trading back to around 15 should get us a second, and since our second is near the end of that round, getting one earlier opens up a whole lot of opportunities.  Either way, Canales builds his infrastructure with this draft.  Next year, with all our picks and probably picking somewhere between 10 and 15, we can get real stars.   All of this depends on hitting on picks this year.
    • You got the gist of his main issue. He plays LB or whatever on D, but hates to tackle and contact. That's the summary.  I normally have a wide margin of " Hey vet min/bring him for try out/maybe he changed/etc etc". But he can not be trusted, * but he did just have his "best" season. He's like those RB that refuse to run between the tackles, bounce everything outside...they too are scared of contact. That's like the whole point of NFL, he's able to trick and athlete his way for 5 years, props to him and his agent.  Me personally I view him like virus, I wouldn't want him on film shying away from hitting while the rookies&UDFA are looking for how the Panthers do things. Plus Im the biggest sucker there is about giving former 1st, 2nd, etc another chances. Just not someone who doesn't want to play NFL and fools those with his god given gifts.  ____________________________________________________________   \ Not to add another layer to this, but I feel contact and hitting its the biggest problem for the NFL. I sorta agree with TEs, WRs, and RBs either going out of bounds or falling to the ground to avoid a solid hit(this goes out the window for 1st downs, SB, etc.) Like if a WR caught a deep slant and already gained 17 yards, but here comes a safety with a great angle, Im all for that WR to fall on the ground...... ugh...... But I think the opposite for my defense. I feel this topic is central sun hot and NFL has done a great job in avoiding it. Im surprised NFL is still allowed, I have huge doubts in the future.
    • not sure if carolina picks a WR in this draft, they have some young WR already and will let them develop. Need another vet imo.  I think carolina is going to pass more to the RB's this coming season, look for them to move heaven and earth for Cam Skatteboo.  I really hope they go TE Warren in the 1st. That would add another dynamic to this offense.
