Has "Shula" Redeemed Himself?

I think a lot of his improvement is centered around Cam making better decisions.  The offensive line's improvement is a big element of that too.

I would be interested in knowing just how different this offense is than the one he installed two years ago, or if it's the same but just much better executed.

I think you are right that a big part of our success is Cam really being healthy as well as understanding the offense much better. The play calling likely has changed as the O line allows us to call longer developing plays as well as more complex running plays like reverses. When you add that to better run blocking and Stewart being healthy it all comes together to improve the offense and improve player execution.

I also expect that we continue to hone the offense around Cams strengths such as operating out of the shotgun and using the no huddle.

I wouldn't say Shula has redeemed himself.

What would you think is the more likely of scenarios?

That at some point the switch just came on for a man well ingrained in his habits as coaches are prone to be?

or

The switch has come on for a 5th year QB with improved protection and a growing knowledge of concept, design and what the defense is trying to do?

I side with the latter.  Shula has been waiting for Cam to take control.  He gives Cam a handful of plays and trusts his QB to read the D and make the best call.  Shula hasn't changed.  His personnel has gotten better and is executing the way it has to for this style of offense to work.

Has Shula redeemed himself? For what? Being handed a bunch of hot garbage and being told to run a ball control offense. For taking a quarterback most folks said would need 2 years to even be a starter and making him into a probowler who is getting nods for MVP?

For taking an offense that has been banged up and hurt and creating points and yards with arguably the worse receiving group in the NFL two years in a row?

Better question is whether the fans have redeemed themselves enough to deserve Shula after all the crap they gave him since he became OC.

I never will be a big Shula fan but the bond he has managed to create with Cam Newton is special and he knows how to design running plays so he could be a lot worse. I still hate we never call roll outs, with Cam those plays are so lethal.

i feel like there are TONs of plays that every other team runs for easy yardage that just aren't in our playbook. roll outs, rub routes, and other things of that nature. we occasionally call screen passes but they are usually at the worst possible time and aren't effective at all.

we're also dead last in YAC and i think most people thought that would improve with KB out and two speedsters at receiver. i think his play design must be pretty shitty.

I'd love to see more screens to Fozzy. He's one of the better RBs in the game when it comes to his ability in the passing game. Instead we get screens to Bersin, Tolbert and Cotchery :/

i'd like to see screens to pretty much anyone but bersin, tolbert, cotchery or olsen. a few years ago stewart looked pretty good in the screen game and we just completely abandoned that.

i realize that 27 PPG is pretty good, but it just seems like every play is an absolute struggle. we hardly ever see those easy completions.

To be fair, Offensive Coordinators take it from fans in nearly every city (college and pro). So it's not like we are that special for having given him a hard time.

Personally, I recognize that I just plain don't know enough to really criticize. I'm a football fan. I don't do it for a living. I think most analysts are fans that get paid to watch more than we do. Whereas people in football are professionals. As a career soldier, most everyone
