Funchess losing snaps weekly

Well, there are two scenarios with this:

1) Our front office thought he was NFL ready and that is why we didn't sign a vet WR to be a #2 this year (Stevie Johnson, etc).

2) Our front office knew he was a project but still ignored getting a true #2.

Either way the Funchess project is a fail this year and you should blame the FO more than the player.  Next year, it may pan out though.

I had to check to make sure Bersin was still on the roster. Haven't seen him lately. Your stats would indicate the staff has even less confidence in him than Funchess.

Here's another possibility. Ginn has been catching the ball well lately, and we all know Olsen is the 'go to' guy, so with an offense that doesn't throw a ton of passes, there are only so many to go around. I think loss of confidence may be speculation on your part, rather than dead cert reality.

I saw him late in the game.

Honestly though, it looks like the team is somewhat avoiding backups in general. Bersin, Artis-Payne and oothers - though active - aren't seeing many snaps.

My guess: Getting a lot of rest and prep for later in the season when they may be needed more as fatigue starts to set in. But frankly also could just be a confidence thing (i.e. more confident in tired starters than fresh backups)

I don't think it is silly to expect a WR to catch passes.

That's what he was drafted to do.

I can see him not being a great blocker or route runner as a rookie, but IMHO, he should be able to catch the ball.

Not real high on trading away draft choices and trading up to get a WR who can't catch.  The Panthers have too many holes still.  In my mind, the first and second round, they must have starters or competitors who can step in for starters, not projects.  Projects are round 3 forward.

Just saying what I see.

This is also why I'd like to see them make a trade for a WR. I hope Funchess isn't the reason why they don't trade for a WR. If they believe he'll progress sooner than later, I think the added pressure would hurt his development even more.

He still looks smooth and shows flashes (kind of like he did throughout his career at Michigan) he's still very young but drops have always been an issue. Once the game slows down for him I expect him to clean up SOME of his drop issues. I'd love for Carolina to be stomping someone in the next few weeks so they could spend some time just feeding Funchess and getting him some quality reps.
