actually in the use case you're refrencing here, dumb means mute or lacking the ability of speech, while the term for deaf is deaf. For further study, see the phrase "deaf and dumb"

In the use case I was invoking, the two concepts I highlighted lacked wit or intelligence, which is the primary definition for the word "dumb". The use case involving the ability to speak is more of an old school slang term that eventually became an official definition through heavy coloquial use, although the word does have some roots to an ancient Norse term that meant "mute", but mostly it's the descendant of a Germanic term meaning "stupid" especially as relates to the English language.

But I am glad Hardy is gone.  He makes to many questionable decisions in his personal life, even if he wasn't guilty of the crime he was charged with.  To risky to sign to the big contract he would have wanted.
