Cam Newton, the next Steve Young? But better?

Each year, Cam gets compared to another QB. Early on he was compared to Vick, then Cunningham, and here we are with Young. It's a stair step progression upwards as each QB of the past they bring up is better, sometimes much better, than the one before.

When they start doing this, they are delineating someone's rise to greatness. And we are still years away from Cam's ceiling, I think. If he keeps developing his game this year, the comparisons will start falling off and he'll stand alone for his style and capabilities.

Then the next generation will be judged against him.

In fairness to the media, and so called experts; his most frequent legitimate comparison was to Ben Roethlisberger from the cognoscenti.

Not all were to Mike Vick, Kaepernick, Wilson, and RG3 (when the latter three came into the NFL).

He actually, resembled/resembles, several big bodied, big armed, drop back QB's we know of, and not those little guys scurrying around all the time.

Steve Young = Russell Wilson

- Scrambling QB

- Won with amazing supporting cast

- Gets tons of credit for winning

Cam Newton = Cam Newton

- Ppl hate giving credit to

- First bad game and ppl will turn their back

- Is completely changing the QB position due to winning without numbers but having an amazing impact

- Our freaking QB! I'm going to love to see him continue to grow and there is no way to compare him.

Great stats. Before 1995, I was a 49ers fan. I loved both Joe Montana and Steve Young... but Steve Young also had Jerry Rice. Cam is very early in his career and will break this record this year. For him to be doing this without a real #1 WR is amazing.

Speaking of Russell Wilson: He runs around way too much. I get tired just looking at him rolling out, back, side ways-all the time on practically every possession. Geesh!

Wilson's not a pocket QB at all. If it were Wilson (instead of Cam trying to win the game down the stretch), time would have just ran out on Wilson trying to scrambling around.

You noticed Cam read the defense quickly (including blitzes), and just got rid of the ball to the appropriate receiver-with the right throw!? Wilson, can't do that, when the pocket becomes dirty. He's too short. Hence, his reasons to run around like a wild chicken... He's a quick throw, one read QB, who's actually best when throwing on the run. When are more people going to realize this!?

Brees, at his height doesn't have to do that, cause he's learned how to quickly shift his feet/rotate, and look through the narrow passing lanes between the OL,  defensive lineman, and pass rush.

I can't see Wilson last long playing this style. It's so tiring, even to look at.

Yes, Seattle's OL has something to do with it as well. But just get rid of the ball sometimes, so you don't have to run around so much and risk loss of yards, injury or INT's.

Wilson's luck can't last forever.

Wilson is one significant leg injury away from NOT being a franchise QB anymore . His game is all about his legs like RG3. He better stay healthy.
