Was in high school then . The upstart WFL was trying to compete with the NFL on a shoestring budget, primarily in smaller markets. Our Charlotte (football) Hornets played at Memorial Stadium. As I remember the league folded after about 2 years.

According to Wikipedia, it wasn't even after two years. They folded halfway through their second season.
