Steve Smith's son thinks we should make a trade for a certain WR before the deadline

Joe Montana did not come back to the 49ers.  Steve Smith is not coming back to Carolina.

Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Steve McNair, Marcus Allen, Tony Gonzalez, Steve McMichael, Brett Favre, Reggie White (remember him) and many other star players finished their careers with teams other than the one they were most closely identified with.

Guys like Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Bruce Matthews, Brian Urlacher and many others toiled their entire careers for one team but never got a championship ring. While others like Troy Aikman and Warren Sapp saw glory but then stuck around long enough to see their teams spiral downward into mediocrity.

Happy endings aren't really the norm in the NFL.

If Smith's career doesn't end like he'd have wanted it to, he'll be one of many.

Development of the ENTIRE team.  He was/is a good WR, but a CANCER as a teammate.

Dunn, I don't really disagree with the majority of what you said with the exception of a little hyperbole.

In my opinion Smitty was never a lockeroom cancer. I'm not sure I ever heard that. The guy obviously had his way of doing things and was the leader on this team for many years during good times and bad.

Young Cam needed to be the new leader and it was very difficult for him to take reigns from the guy that had been "Mr. Panther" for so many years.  It bothered me at the time but I think it was a smart, strategic move for the franchise to let him go and turn the page so to speak.

The franchise has moved on and won't be looking to bring him back until he walks on the field to retire his jersey.

there's zero chance which sucks but let's address the ongoing myth's associated with smith

1. Steve Smith is a cancer, probably one of the dumbest things i've heard.....13 years not a peep from teammates or coaches, if you are a cancer it shows(Percy Harvin,Terrell Owens)

2. Steve Smith demands the ball, false......just another dumb myth created with people who don't watch the game cling to as an argument

3. His departure helped Cam's development, false.....look back at 2013, Cam was spreading the ball around then,he's never locked in on smith like most will say,it's funny because Flacco is has been doing the same thing for 2 seasons now, Smith himself said he wasn't worried about stats in which a Chud lead offense got him, he preferred the wins in which a Shula lead offense yielded. Cam never had a glaring issue with locking on receivers or getting through his progressions, more so his footwork and putting touch or air under his deep passes.

This 100%

Smith only demanded the ball because he knew he was damn good enough to score. Of course he cares about stats. Every great WR has but Smith has never done that at the expense of the team.

Personally I think the team could do this anyway it wanted to. We can be successful with him or without him. It would be a great story to have Smith back. I think that plays into the hearts of all of us to an extent. But I also think that Cam Newton might, just maybe be so good that it doesn't matter. If Cam keeps trending up he is reaching Brett Favre level of play. We all see it. Every Sunday. Cam is a special player.  And I think he's the type of guy that can make people look better around him. Yes our WRs are underrated but Cam is the reason this all works. At all.
