Eagles game plan: Hit Newton repeatedly

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

“Get him uncomfortable,” Cox said, via Ed Kracz of the Burlington County Times. “Hit him, hit him, hit him, hit him, hit him, even when they run the ball, hit him. I think that will shake him up a bit, make him frustrated and that’s when all quarterbacks start doing crazy things.”

It worked a year ago, when the Eagles sacked Newton nine times and picked him off three times in a dominating performance. But Newton’s playing with a different confidence so far this year, is healthier and has better protection.

He also doesn’t shy away from contact, putting his linebacker-sized frame to good use when he’s outside the pocket. And they’re clearly comfortable with him running it, as the Panthers lead the league in rush attempts.

That creates more opportunities for him to get hit, which is exactly what the Eagles are looking for.

Pay close attention to this part...

"Hit him, hit him, hit him, hit him, hit him, even when they run the ball, hit him.

What you'll want to note here is that Cox is not talking about when Newton runs the ball.  He's talking about plays where Newton hands it off.

Basically, he's saying they plan to take cheap shots.

It's legal on read option plays. Same thing Suggs did to Bradford in the preseason.

I don't see it as specifying read option plays only, guys.

It's basically not even possible to hit a QB legally on a standard handoff from under center though it is still legal if you hit him within about a second of the handoff.

This is absolutely talking about read option plays and read option style handoffs where the edge defender is left completely unblocked.

They got the idea from this which was incorrectly flagged: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000514817/Suggs-tackles-Bradford-low-gets-flagged

    • Going to put this out now….Koochie shutout tmrw
    • Dude, its 13 points if you think about it. I guess you take away the three since they kicked the FG after the TD no call was upheld, but Eddie missed two very makeable kicks and they can't be whining about the run game since a fumble sealed the game! Starting to think a lot of people around here don't know football. I get it, it's a message board, but they come on and start threads and it seems like they don't watch the games. There are ESPN takes on here with people who are supposed to be diehards.
    • Probably but he has flashed some.  He's a 2nd year player.   Certainly shown that he's an NFL QB.  Almost 3 years older than Bryce so not as much room for growth.   I'd say Bryce has the significantly higher ceiling.     And sure.   I agree.   He needs to continue to show this growth to get people to buy in. The Eagles is an outlier.  That game will be extremely ugly. I think his play has earned him the chance to compete for starting spot next year with whomever the team brings back.   And it has given the team the luxury of not feeling QB desperate in the draft.     ****Unless he completely falls off the planet again and reverts back to what he was, then it's QB time in the draft again***
