Ron Rivera or John Fox?

Mr. Scot

Before we go off the deep end for Rivera, we have to remember that the vast, the VAST majority of people on this forum last year at this time wanted Rivera fired.

Fox can take a crappy team and turn it around in about two seasons. He has a talent for rebuilding from nothing. His style is old school, smashmouth football and he builds teams that way. It makes them competitive quickly, built around a stout defense, a good offensive line and a good running back tandem. It works, but the teams won't last forever. If you own an NFL team and you need a new head coach to turn everything around, he's got to be high on your list.

Ron's turning out a darned good team, but the last few years have had their ups and downs. Slow starts and long losing streaks aren't good for a coach's longevity. Let's just say the issue is still up in the air for Rivera. This is the make or break year for him.  He'll either make his mark as a good coach or he'll go the route that many first time head coaches do, a few flashes of brilliance, a lot of hard lessons learned.

Right now, Fox is the better, more experienced coach, with a specific niche for his skill set. Saying otherwise would be passing up on the eviodence before us in favor of blatant homerism.

Yeah, but that wasn't the question. As I recall, the question was who would you rather have.

Of course the mood is right for Rivera now so he's the easy choice. But looking beyond this season's success I'm taking Rivera over Fox because of his willingness to adapt and evolve. Fox was stubborn 'til the bitter end. Exhibit A: his departure from the Broncos. Sure, it was mutual, but it came down to his lack of willingness to make changes to the team. At times, admirable. But not in defeat.

That's tough to answer. Haven't seen the top end of Rivera's game yet. Fox, yeah, we've seen it and it can lead to the Super Bowl.

I'm going to sit back and enjoy the ride we're on. It's been a long wait, but I think Rivera's got it now.

Honestly this is one of the lowest forms of debate (who's the better coach) when the team in question is 5-0, so I'm not surprised Gantt is serious about the point he's trying to make but I'm pretty sure there were no idiots running around imagining that Seifert was actually better when the Panthers were 5-0 in 2003, hot off a win against another undefeated team, the Colts.

John Fox is ancient history here. The coaching staff is different, the players are different, the executives are different, the locker room culture is different. Ron is our guy in charge now. Gantt is grasping at straws.
