Ron Rivera or John Fox?

Mr. Scot

To be fair, Rivera has a huge advantage of having Cam compared to the Bad News Bears QBs Fox had to trot out. If we had Cam in 08 we win that Super Bowl with ease. Fox always put together strong defenses and we were always very good at running the ball. We really wasted about 5 years of Steve Smith's prime by not having a legit QB.

Delhomme was what Fox wanted in a QB.

Before we go off the deep end for Rivera, we have to remember that the vast, the VAST majority of people on this forum last year at this time wanted Rivera fired.

Fox can take a crappy team and turn it around in about two seasons. He has a talent for rebuilding from nothing. His style is old school, smashmouth football and he builds teams that way. It makes them competitive quickly, built around a stout defense, a good offensive line and a good running back tandem. It works, but the teams won't last forever. If you own an NFL team and you need a new head coach to turn everything around, he's got to be high on your list.

Ron's turning out a darned good team, but the last few years have had their ups and downs. Slow starts and long losing streaks aren't good for a coach's longevity. Let's just say the issue is still up in the air for Rivera. This is the make or break year for him.  He'll either make his mark as a good coach or he'll go the route that many first time head coaches do, a few flashes of brilliance, a lot of hard lessons learned.

Right now, Fox is the better, more experienced coach, with a specific niche for his skill set. Saying otherwise would be passing up on the eviodence before us in favor of blatant homerism.

As a gameday coach, I would say Fox is better.  As a coach that can develop talent, Rivera trust his younger players lets them play and lets them make mistakes and learn, Fox did not do that.  You can blame bad drafting by Hurney or lack of development by Fox, I don't really know.  But then again I think that John Gruden was one of the best gameday coaches you will find anywhere.  But some of his personal moves where just WTF.

So it's one of those questions what is more important in coaching? Developing the young players you have to use their talents effectively or using less talented players and putting them into better position to succeed?  In the end I would go with Rivera, better talent usually wins in this league.

Riverboat/Gettleman look better than Fox/Hurney.  Fox/Hurney looked better than Rivera/Hurney.  Who knows how good Fox/Gettleman would have been?

I was just about to say something like this. I may lean Rivera as the better coach but Gettlemen/Fox>Rivera Hurney

No way Fox would have been cool with drafting a huge risk like Cam.  He would have begged and pleaded for a FA game manager and use the pick on Dareus.

I have a hard time crowning Fox as a superior gameday coach when I remember his decision not to adjust the coverage for Larry Fitzgerald in 2008.
