Rivera says Shaq Thompson walked into the stadium today without crutches, which Rivera viewed as a good sign.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says LB Shaq Thompson still has to get an MRI but the early prognosis is a sprained knee. http://espn.go.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0447820057221799459-4

Rivera says the hope is that Shaq Thompson has a sprain/bone contusion. He'll get an MRI later today. Watch LIVE > [http://panth.rs/6dBrIz ]

Ron Rivera said Cam Newton made some "really nice decisions" in the fourth quarter. Praised Greg Olsen and Jonathan Stewart, too.

Rivera credits OC Mike Shula for his play calls and also his patience shown sticking to the game plan. It obviously paid off in the end.

Rivera praised Cam Newton for a simple check down to JStew that gained 8 yards. Said it was the play of the game.

RR calls that check down “the biggest play of the game” and younger Cam doesn’t do that.

Ron Rivera said Panthers lost contain a few times on Russell Wilson, which was not the plan. But said that got better in second half.

Rivera praised DC Sean McDermott for calling a blitz call that resulted in a Thomas Davis sack in the second half.

While offense stayed the course, defense did too. Just executed better late and did pull out a couple of nice blitz looks that worked.

Ron Rivera said this was one of Cam Newton's best fourth quarters of his career.

Rivera credits his coordinators for sticking with game plan vs. Seattle. Added that McDermott sent a couple timely blitzes late.

Rivera says execution down the final stretch is a sign of maturity for Cam Newton & the entire team. Watch LIVE > [http://panth.rs/6dBrIz ]

Rivera says big pass plays vs Roman Harper were due in part to Russell Wilson getting too much time to throw, incl scramble play to Graham.

RR says some of the troubles Harper had vs Graham wasn’t just about Harper. Two were because of what LBs did/didn’t do.

Rivera said execution down the final stretch is a sign of maturity for Cam Newton as well as the team.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says the big plays by Seattle TE Jimmy Graham weren't all on safeties Roman Harper and... http://espn.go.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0447822783502622272-4

Ron Rivera said defense playing with a chip on its shoulder and "it's not going to go away. We still have a lot to prove."

Rivera: "We have something to prove."

Ron Rivera on if Panthers losing us-vs-the-world mentality: "It's not going away. I'm not going to let it."

And for the second day in a row, Rivera references the Patriots when discussing the NFL standard. This team has big goals.

Ron Rivera called New England the "target" because they are on top of the heap as defending Super Bowl champions.

Rivera talking about other wins similar to this one vs. Seattle. Reminds me of 49ers W in '13. Out west, NFC power, huge confidence boost.

Ron Rivera didn't rest Luke Kuechly because "you do what you need to do. That (plan) went out the window."

Ron Rivera said CB Teddy Williams is in the concussion protocol. He hopes to get A.J. Klein out of protocol this week, but no guarantees.

Ron Rivera praising the special teams play of Tre Boston, who replaced a concussed Teddy Williams as gunner. Williams in protocol, btw.

Ron Rivera praised punters Brad Nortman for his hang time and directional punting on Sunday. #puntersarepeopletoo

Teddy Williams in concussion protocol. He's role as gunner on punt coverage is big, but Tre Boston did fill in nicely for him.

Ron Rivera said he doesn't worry about letdown against Eagles. Said he just has to remind players of last year's loss.

That was a HUGE play by Shaq. By how Lockett has been taking kicks back, i cant lie about belting out an "awww sshhiiiiit dude" when he came out the endzone.

I was expecting the panthers to be the panthers and somehow let miracle wilson in the endzone.

But we turned that corner

great play shaq

If he's referring to the check down early in the final drive, I said pretty much the same thing when it happened.  That was a GREAT sign to me.  Early in his career, Cam would've been trying to push the ball downfield in that situation no matter what.  The best play to make in the NFL is the play the D is giving you.  We had plenty of time on the clock and the two minute warning plus a timeout in our pocket.  There was no need to take unnecessary risk at that point and Cam didn't.

Yeah, our gunners were on point.  Lockett hurt both Shaq and Williams on returns because our guys were coming in hot and he just turtled up like a bitch at the ten yard line both times.  He absolutely didn't intend to hurt anyone and was just trying to protect himself, but it still sucks.

Surely not... he looked completely out of it and he had a concussion in pre season also didn't he?

No I was talking about Darryl Williams on the offensive line coming back from his knee. I'm guessing it will be week to week from now on so we may hear more about it. If not, I'm afraid 15 just may blow the lid off this place to get some answers.

I forgot to mention in my thread about it, but I did notice on one of graham's big catches that it appeared Luke was responsible for it because he hadn't dropped far enough back into his zone and let Graham behind him.  Seattle ran a back in front of Luke and it looked like he cheated up as a result.

Regardless, that was ONE play I noticed.   It appeared the vast majority of Graham's big plays were against Harper in man coverage,so unless he was supposed to be double-covered, idk who else that falls on.

That's a long way of saying, I think Ron is looking out for Roman.   Who cares, we won.

i love how it's never Roman Harper's fault. they're always making some type of excuses for him

I love how so many 'fans' poo on Harper. He's made the Pro Bowl and somebody in another thread actually called him trash today. Give the guy a break. He's a 32 yr. old safety filling a need and providing veteran leadership for young DB's. You can't upgrade every position with young talent all at once.

    • Agreed on the last part. They can’t afford to lose all these games with Martin and Perets.
    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
