Officiating (Finally) Goes Technological

interesting video. starts kinda corny, but its good to know they are working on eliminating as many blown calls as possible. they do say that its likely there will always be officials, since teams are always going to commit penalties. but eliminating as much of the ball-position nonsense as possible with tech is a great thing IMO.

ive been waiting for 10 years for NFL football to start welcoming technological integration to the game. uniform sensors, pylon cameras, smart-footballs, etc. there was even a point where they illustrated a QB HUD. idk how i feel about that one, but its exciting to see where the sport could go with technology.

this is Panthers related because its league related, and because the refs take every opportunity to screw us over. with tech, there will be less room for them to do that.

Terrible. Refs screwing up are part of sports. Before we know it no humans will be playing it'll only be robots so that no person can get hurt.

the whole point of this was to show that the NFL is trying to lessen the control that referees have on the game via technology. not sure where you got this from.

robots arent going to play football. we watch to see humans perform. idk what else to say to that

Thinking more about this there could be a lot done. Injuries could be lessened when used with new pads and sensors. Pads are restrictive but new pads could be developed that senses a hit and adjusts stiffness. Accelerometers could be used to protect head and neck injuries. But people are slow to change

I never understood the argument against using technology to improve these games.

I don't care about the history or the tradition, I care that they get everything right.

Exactly. The old argument used to be that it would slow the game down too much. Now, we have the technology and means to have a couple of guys in a film room for every game, every play. They can just call down if the was a missed or botched call. It would take about 10 seconds to rewind and view the play a couple of times. We could even eliminate the 5 minutes spent staring into the microwave for reviews and actually speed things up.

And to the other poster... No wants wants robots playing football (most of us don't anyway), but we'd all be fine with robots officiating.

Eh. Subjectivity will always be needed for stuff like the Dez catch or roughing the passer but there's no reason spot of the ball or out of bounds calls shouldn't be exact.

My problem with technology is my mistrust of those who use it. Anything technological can be manipulated, if you dont believe me, look into voting booths that use electronic voting.

Put enough money into anything and then it becomes subject to the whims of those who have massive interest in controlling the outcomes. (Fan Dual/ DraftKings) Not a nutty conspiracy theorist, but while humans make errors, I dread the day that technology rules everything and is the unquestioned authority.

Oh my god yes, why can't they do it similarly to how they do in College? Have a ref up in the booth that has control over replay who goes over every challenge instead of sending the head ref to the sideline. Then just buzz down to the guy on the field when a verdict is reached. simple and gives more jobs to 'Muricans dammit.
