Afraid that doesn't make it make any more sense.

Well, I'm sorry that you're incapable of thinking outside the box and entertaining an idea that might actually be helpful in the right situation. I don't even think we should do it, but it should not be dismissed outright because no one else does it or it's too risky.

I'm plenty capable of thinking outside the box.

I still think this idea is dumb.

But it didn't list a reason for it? Surprised that it's so hard to find an answer for that. Mr.Scot is the football historian, so I'll listen to him about the injury thing then haha

I got the NFL bylaws (.pdf file) and found the relevant part. But it doesn't say why. It just says this shall be this and that shall be that. Boring to read and not much there so I won't bother posting it. Interesting that I can't find anything written that speaks to the why. In the meantime, yes I'll go with Scot's backing of the injury aspect. Weird though.

I didn't open this thread the first time around, but the only thing that I find irrational about it is that so many of you think RealTalk's idea is crazy. If there's a game where the coaching staff feels they could really use an extra WR, LB, etc., then yeah, they absolutely should consider giving Anderson the Sunday off.

For everyone who thinks that is so obviously dumb. Here's why you're wrong.

In a single game, either:

  • (a) The backup QB will play.

or

  •  (b) The backup QB will not play.

And the choice we are considering is between

  • (1) activating an extra player, thereby increasing the chance of winning if (b) but decreasing the chance of winning if (a)

vs.

  • (2) activating Anderson, thereby increasing the chance of winning if (a) but decreasing the chance of winning if (b).

Since (b) is the far more likely scenario, it is easy to see how this decision would be rational if in fact the coach's thought an extra player would help them on a given Sunday.

While I like your logical approach, it over-simplifies the decision process.

If you want to add a player to get you over the hump, you basically have to go through the exercise you outlined, but consider all the team's backups.

With QB being the most important position, you almost always elect to sit a backup at some other position.
