Once someone has hope for the future, they're as good as dead. When your arc is finished on TWD, you're done. Noah had a bright future.  Dead. Glenn had a bright future. Dead. Abraham had a bright future. Dead. That's your happily ever after on this show. Characters are just set pieces to further the plot in that fashion, though they're generally more fleshed out than in other shows. I'm really not sure what you're saying here:

the show runners made a clear move a gotcha/fakeouts

You mean like how they rescued Beth only to have her die in front of them?  That was BRILLIANT.

You've gotta think, though, that maybe the brightest future in that world is actually being dead.

I've always thought that this show was never about the zombies and simply about how different people essentially deal with PTSD. There is so much crushingly devastating things that happen to these people (and subsequently to the audience) that the characters are used to develop the different ways that people deal with these stressful situations. Including the moral decisions amidst the horror.

The audience gets the benefit of seeing how different people develop through time and through events. The audience gets to existentially pick and choose. They get to say the pragmatism of early Carol's development is good. The pragmatism of early Shane seemed good at first (perhaps heavy handed) but then it slowly slipped into psychosis when juxtaposed to Rick's gritty white hat determination. This picking and choosing allows the audience to spread the concept of them being the good guys to all of the characters in the group since the development we choose to identify with can be garnered from any or all of the characters.

In the end, the audience is learning how to deal with PTSD whether they know it or not. Or maybe I'm projecting and that's what I'm noticing. :)
