Gimple is getting destroyed on twitter right now, as the finale is also being bashed by critics. What a terrible, terrible idea which was so unnecessary.

Random thought: I really like Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan, I just wish he was a little bit bigger, like in the shoulders. Watching him sizing up the crew, I thought he was kind of unintimidating. Maybe he'll bulk up a little for next season.

He needs to bulk up like Stallone did between rambo 1 and Rambo 2

The more I think about it the more pissed I am...  not only did they make the season finale 90 minutes mainly due to the extra commercials, they literally poo on the fans with this freaking cliffhanger that was totally unnecessary.  Who made this moronic decision?  They could have had one of the biggest moments in TV history and they totally blew it and now I really don't give a poo who they killed off.

'Talking Dead', which is filmed live, had show runner Scott Gimple and Robert Kirkman on, and Hardwick relayed negative fan reaction via twitter to them. It was clear this decision falls 100% at Gimple's feet.  I could tell he had defended the cliffhanger idea before, probably in writer meetings. His logic was epically flawed though, comparing it to LOST and other shows that had legitimate cliffhangers that actually carried weight and wonder.

Ok, I never stay up and watch Talking Dead...  if you tweet him tell him I said he's an idiot.  He really blew an opportunity for an epic episode.  It would've been talked about for months.

The reason they give is bogus though. "It's the end of a story and the beginning of another".  Which is total crap because they could've at least filmed the victim getting completely destroyed and reserved the new "story" for next season.  It's sad they had to use so many tricks this season.  The material itself was there, no need to try to fake the whole audience out every episode.

I just did a search of his name on twitter, within the past hour alone there are dozens of tweets from folks just as pissed as us.

This entire review from AV Club is worth a read.

This is lousy, manipulative storytelling, a cliffhanger that robs a powerful moment (because good or bad, watching Negan beat someone we kind of like to death would’ve been powerful) of its effect for the mercenary purpose of dragging this nonsense out just a little bit further. When you’re telling a story, you want your audience to keep watching, so sometimes you use tricks to keep them watching, but the promise between you and your viewers is that those tricks will never get in the way of the story itself. The tricks will never become the point. But for The Walking Dead, the tricks are all that’s left. The show can only dangle poisoned treats in front of us, dropping them month by month, year by year, until we finally choke on them.

I hate that the terrible ending messed up an exciting show. After months of Rick thinking he's the king of the hill, his comeuppance was complete and utterly devastating. What is this going to do to the survivors and their faithfulness to Rick and his ideas? Seeing them all work as Negans slaves for a while has a lot of potential as the story is reshaped again.

I'll have to see Talking Dead and try and figure out Kirkmans reaction to people regarding the ending and how that affects Gimple, a guy who has made some good tough choices in the past but has maybe gotten somewhat over his head on this one. Of course, it could just be the suits at the network pushing thing and he is backing them up -

That was my point exactly. It would have been much more effective if they showed Glenn (or whoever it is) getting murdered, which still sets you up to deal with the aftermath next season. The  "one story ending, another beginning" still applies. Instead, fans get one of the worst gimmick ever (somehow worse than the whole Glenn/dumpster thing).

Maybe that's what the actors meant when one said he "threw the script at the wall" and another "couldn't sleep all night" and another "it made me sick to my stomach".

It's just a mind-numbingly bad decision any way you look at it.

I've got a friend who watches the show, hasn't read the comics, and never wants me to potentially spoil him when I know spoilers that I have read online or from the comics... Basically, he is the average zombie-media-loving fan of the TV show...

His first words to me this morning were:

"Dude, that ending really pissed me off"

That is all the show runners need to know. I can see how us comic fanbois are written off by other fans and show runners all the time, in TWD and GoT, and I can understand where it comes from... But when your casual viewer feels the EXACT same way over a situation like this, you really dropped the ball.

Decent read...

What's rather intersting is that the interview (more than likely) took place prior to the episode aired, so they knew going in that fans weren't going to like it.

Gimple even compares the cliffhanger scene to Lost (lol).  Holy clueless.

I'm actually wonder if AMC themselves don't even know who died. Think about it. Say for example, if Norman Reedus is leaving the series to do another, but his new series tanks, he may come back, so he'll live. But say Reedus decides not to come back, then he dies. Honestly, it's the only reason I can come up with that explains how bad the episode was.

I only caught a few minutes of the Talking Dead (I will watch the whole thing tonight) but I think I read the disappointment in Kirkman to an extent... He made a note at one point to point out that "there are clues in the scenes that would allow you to know who it was" or something like that... I got the feeling he wanted people to know and that Gimple didn't...

I wonder if Gimple could lose his job over this...

Yep, my wife is the same way. She didn't want to know anything about Negan or what happens in the comics, so it was all fresh. She was just like "uh, what the fug?".

For the casual fan that doesn't read spoilers or follow the comics or even watch Talking Dead, it's not even clear what's happening. Is Negan even killing someone? Maybe he's just beating the crap out of them. Is it a major character, or is it Rosita or Aaron? On "Talking Dead" they said "we lose a beloved character", but how does the casual fan know that?

Like everyone is saying, this could have been one of the highlights of the series, instead it's probably the biggest flop.

This right here, if true (hell, even if not true) is proof Daryl should have died a long time ago... Keeping him around for the show's sake is making the show suffer.

This shouldn't be about Daryl. It is about Rick and Carl. Nobody else should be off limits.
