When did Gary Barnidge become a good TE?

i think it was his third year everyone was expecting him to put it off together and he came out early in the season with absolute dud performances. i think jeremy highlighted a play where we leaked out into the flat on a critical 3rd down headed upfield and dropped a ball placed perfectly in his hands because he took his eyes off the catch a full second before it arrived. real basic fundamental stuff he seemed to have a problem with.

i'd say we've come out on the right side of TE personnel moves since then, though.

Right because the coaches that put Olsen on the map dont know how to utilize a pass catching TE.

Do people think before they post or just try to

K so none of the coaches olsen plays under currently "put him on the map" he was already pretty good and was not drafted by carolina. yes i do think before i post.

Gary Barnidge has always been a good pass catching TE. Just never used him. He was lucky to get 5 targets in a season from the Panthers under Rivera.

He had 250 yards on 20 targets in 2009 (Olsen averages 140 yards for every 20 targets). He got lost in 2010 during the Clausen debacle. In 2011, he was buried under Olsen and Shockey. In 2012, he was only targeted 6 times and caught them all (1 for a TD). 2013 and 2014 he was #2 to Jordan Cameron. They let Cameron walk because they knew they had Barnidge.

Remember Josh McCown and Gary Barnidge played with each other as reserves for the Panthers in 2008 and 2009.

The Panthers are bad for letting talent walk. Steve Smith, Julius Peppers, Evan Mathis, DeAngelo Williams, Jon Beason, Mackenzy Bernadeau, Geoff Schwartz, Nick Hayden, Gary Barnidge, Greg Hardy, and Brandon LaFell.

All are starters in the NFL and making game changing plays for their teams.

Meanwhile the Panthers struggle with DE, WR, #2 TE, and OL. The answers were on the team.

Not even sure where to start with this. Beyond Geoff Schwartz and perhaps Barnidge, there was a clear-cut reason for pretty much everyone else on this list being cut/allowed to leave.

Smitty - pay to production, leadership transition

Peppers - Wasn't interested in staying in Carolina at the time, be it current management or otherwise.

Evan Mathis - underperformed and was average for years after leaving.

Deangelo - pay to production, poor scheme fit.

Beason - Overpaid and couldn't stay healthy, rendered obsolete by Luke.

Bernadeau - Started for a year and now buried on Dallas' depth chart, Byron Bell-level talent.

Hayden - Sucked in Carolina, 2 sacks in 8 seasons, would not make the cut on Carolina's roster.

Barnidge - discussed in this thread, wouldn't mind having him but had Hartsock as the #2 TE for run-blocking. Logical to let him walk.

Hardy - No discussion necessary.

LaFell - punched his ticket out of town when he said, publicly no less, that he had no interest in being 'the guy' at WR. Not that we needed him to be, but he was invisible when Smitty got hurt and DG doesn't want players without that mindset.

I bet the list of people we let go in the last six years that didn't amount to anything is a lot longer

this is bullshit survivorship bias at its best. Oh also since Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are sidelined with injuries, I guess the front office perfectionists are taking interviews again because the "poster boy for former players that happen to excel to bring up so we can contradict the leadership and make it look like we know what we're talking about" position is vacant and needs to be filled. Oh hey Barnidge come on down!

It's laughable. Seriously? We're touting Nick Hayden now?

Even worse, let's not even consider the level of the contribution these players are making. "He starts for the Jaguars! He must be good! What a fail by us!"

It's like folks haven't watched a single minute of the Panthers beyond 2013...
